Personally, i always go for Asus boards. I have heard good things about Gigabyte though.

why bother with X48 -just go P45 or even P43 would work fine and would be cheaper, unless you really do have crossfire lined up for the future?

Yea, unless you really want Crossfire go for a P45 board.

Gigabyte and Asus are both great brands, it really doesn't matter which you get as long as it has what you need...

I got my X48-DQ6 in a package deal with my Q9300 for $300 at Fry's. Considering each one was ~$300 on Newegg at that time, I wasn't complaining. I haven't had any problems with this system at all. Nothing like the nightmares I encountered with my NF4/X-Fi setup a few years ago.

p48's are expensive unless you need the crossfire functionality.

gigabyte's a good brand though. their "ultra-cool, ultra-durable" really are built on thicker silicon--which helps if you're someone like me who tends to change around components and stress the board fairly often. also, larger hsf's can put cantilever force on the sockets. the cheapest of the cheap boards, when mated to some of the giant hsf's have been known to actually pull the socket out of the mobo and come crashing down in a big smoking heap on top of gpu, sound card, etc.

asus of gigabyte should be fine though
