The guy there explained to me that having 4gb of 1066 was actually slower than 2gb of 667 which was also cheaper. Something to do with 1066 not being divisible by 333 and so the ram would automatically cancel down to 667 slowing the machine down.

I wasnt too sure about it at first either but the logic and maths played out so i went for it, and tbh RAM is so cheap if im not happy i can just upgrade in the future fairly easily.

Unfortunately, that guy was talking complete crap. The speed of the RAM doesn't make a huge difference at default, but that RAM will mean that you've got absolutely no overclocking headroom, and 4GB of RAM will almost always be faster than 2GB.

Well i upgrded yesteray:

Intel 8400
Gigabyte GA-X48-DS5 Motherboard
ATi 4870 1024 Card
2Gb 667 Ram
650w power supply

Thanks for your help guys, all i got to do now is get it running :/

One question, the HD4870 GFX card needs to be plugged into the powersupply unlike my last card. However the card seems to have 2 sources of output to connect to the supply, however i was only given one cable.

Now the card asks for at LEAST 550w supply and mine is 350 but going to get the new 600w today. When i turn my machine on the screen says "you have not connected one or more of the power supply connectors to the GFX card". Now im not sure if its not picking up because i have too little power or if im missing a connector thats not been put into the box.

EDIT: I realised that my 350w supply only had one PCI connector and now that i have the 650 everything is fine, plugging it in now and ready to go

And Quads i heard are better at multi tasking rather than gaming.

Well im steering more towards this now:

Intel E8400
ATi 4870 (is 1024 too much?)
p45 motherboard

I have 1024 mb and i think its worth the extra money

A 8800gtx to 4850 wouldn't be that great a upgrade.

The way i took it was he wanted to upgrade to the 8800GTX.

8400 - better gaming
Q6600 - better multitasking
Q9450 - good for both

GTX2** series are good cards if you use adobe products or you prefer to play crysis, otherwise get the better value 4870.

Some people are now telling me to upgrade to a Q9450 instead of the E8400 (apparently better for games) or Q6600 (apparently better for multitasking).

Hmm this has totally stumped me really.

So in terms of performance and "longetivity" is the ATi 4870 better than the 8800GTX?

And sorry if this is a stupid question but someone said about the E8400 over the Q6600, surely quad core is better? Or is that not how it works :s

What are peoples views on the nVidia GTX 260 compared to the 4870?

Q6600 and 8800GTX is OK. Just get a decent motherboard and you'll be OK.

It's only two months away from next year, and you might want to wait that long to see if AMD can pull another "RV770" to Intel. Then you can choose between not-so-expensive Phenom II to less-expensive Core i7.

I figure that, if price is right (<$150), 8800 GTX (768MB) or 8800 Ultra is probably better choice until DX11 cards roll out on the cheap.

What are your current specs and budget?

Are you reusing the case, HDD, PSU etc?
