Internet won't work

Hi guys :)

So, my computer was being a pain in the arse and I decide to just install everything new. I formatted by HD and installed XP, works great this far. I've also installed my grahics drivers, and I'm downloading audio drivers as we speak.

Now, the problem is that my internet won't work. I plug the cord in and absolutely nothing happens. There's supposed to be a little light just when you hve plugged it in bu nothing happens. The operating system can't see any internet connection, and no matter how many times I've restarted my system, nothing happens. When I had Vista installed I just plugged it in and it would work flawlessly.

I looked through some of the internet guides that came with XP but haven't been able to understnd what I'm supposed to do. I've tried using the cable right to the internet connection without having it go through my router but that won't work either.

I'm not quite sure where to start, so I' asking you guys for help :)

(oh and btw I'm writing this on my laptop)

So your router works, but your PC wont get on the internet?

Sounds like you've broken the port at the back... If no light comes on...

Well, I wonder how that could have happened...

I never unplugged the internet cable while I was reformatting + installing XP... and it worked with Vista (though the whole computer was acting weird)

Just nothing happens now, it's really weird.

Are there some drivers I would need to install that I've missed, perhaps?

(or I'll just buy a new LAN card)

Oh and I got my sound working. Took a while to get the damn drivers to install correctly but it works great now :) Clear and crisp sound

I had a similar issue. Try disabling your ethernet card then re-enabling it; it worked for me. :)

How do I do that then? Yeah I'm a noob when it comes to stuff like this :)

Just played a bit of CoD4 SP, everything else works great. I'm so happy :yay:

Look in control panel > system > device manager
If there are any yellow ! or ? something is conflicting or needs drivers.
You will find your network adapters in there also.

Yeah I noticed there were 2 devices that had question marks. I'm not quite sure what drivers to install, but I've looked through the Acer site for my desktop and found several drivers supposedly for the same thing... I'll test a bit and then we'll see.

Ok, I have no idea what I'm supposed to do I here, and I can't find out what my ethernet specifications I have using google. HALP

But, in case no one comes up with any solution ^^, would this be a good card to buy? Or is it maybe even overkill? I just want something that I can browse the web and play games with without problems :p

If it's an Acer PC go to their website and download the drivers, it should be the marvel LAN driver. You may also need the chipset driver.

You sure it's the Marvel driver? The Acer site lists 3 different LAN drivers... But sure, I'll give it a try when I get home. I might have tried it before tho.

Here we have one Marvel driver, one Marvell - not sure if it's a spelling error or another thing all together - and some other random brand I haven't heard of (note that it must be a XP driver)

Seems to be what I'm looking for. If anyone has anything else helpful, bring it up :)

EDIT 2: OK lol, another update. I'm still at my school downloading the drivers to my laptop, and the ones I've downloaded this far are: (Graphics and audio drivers are already installed)

AMD Dual Core optimizer
Chipset driver
Modem driver
Lan driver (Marvell ^^)
And Rivatuner just to tune my gfx card a bit

Anything critical I've missed?

I presumed Marvel was typo, in which case the Marvel driver is a newer version than the Marvell driver.

Yep, you were correct. Thanks for the help Natt and everyone else. :)

Now I'll just have to download and install all my games and patches then... haha
