I'm overclocking my Q6600 and need some quick advice. If I lower the CPU voltage, does that mean there will be higher or lower temperatures?

I'm also having some trouble with the voltages. I set me voltage to 1.3725 in bios, not sure if that's exact but pretty darn close. Well I'm a little concerned because here's the readings I get from various programs:

HWMonitor: CPU VCORE = 1.31 to 1.33

CPU-Z: Core Voltage = 1.328

Core Temp: VID = 1.325

So what the heck is going on? Is VCORE, voltage, and VID all referred to as the same thing or what?

The higher the vcore the higher the temperatures

What ever you set your vcore to in the bios it will generally be lower in windows because of vdroop. You can do pencil volt mods for your motherboard to correct this

dnt worry abut the readings being different in windows and different across software, it happens a lot. As log as you dont exceed the rated limit for the chip you are in no danger anyway.

VID = voltage that your chip is requesting, not actual vcore.
Vcore = CPU voltage

VID is the standard voltage your CPU will require to run it's stock frequency. The Vcore is the actual voltage being supplied. The higher the Vcore, the higher the temps, but also, the higher the speed the CPU can run.

If you are having trouble running a faster FSB speed, try upping the Northbridge voltage. In order to run a higher FSB, the northbridge needs more volts in order for it to stay stable. If you have average motherboard cooling then use maybe 1.4v, if you have some kind of active fan on it or a good air supply over the motherboard, 1.5v would work.

Well I got to 3.2GHz with my Q6600 at, I think, 1.3025. I haven't changed any settings on the NB or SB. The only other thing I did was enter my memory values and set them to run at 713MHz instead of 667MHz.

Prime95 7hours stable. Max temps were at like 57C. I'm going to try and lower the voltage still, see how far down I can go without being unstable.

By the way, is that a good overclock? First overclock :hmm:.

yeah 3.2 is a good overclock and i doubt you would notice much of a difference between that and 3.5-3.6.
Some people get more out of Q6600's but 3.2 is nothing to be ashamed of. If you kept pushing the voltage you should be able to get a bit more but dont go higher than 1.5v.
Looking at the temps it seems you have a little room for more but make sure you dont go much higher than 60-65 degrees under load. If you need to up the NB voltage for system stability, make sure that stays at a reasonable temperature aswell.
Personally i would be content with that voltage and that speed :)
What cooler do you have?

Tuniq Tower 120. I'm going to try and get the voltage lower still. I wasn't aiming for higher than 3.2GHz to be honest and I'm perfectly fine with it.
