4870 1GB vs GTX260 core 216

I thought id post this as its a Good review for anyone looking in the $300 (£180) price range

On the one hand you have performance. The two cards trade off wins, with eVGA's GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 usually running games faster with no AA/AF applied but the Radeon HD 4870 1GB pulling catching up with 4xAA and pulling ahead, sometimes by quite a lot, with 8xAA. There are some games where one card or the other will be faster in all situations.

What it really comes down to is the specific games you play and the settings you intend to use. If you won't use AA or you are have a long-term love affair with a game for which Nvidia's new card offers a big performance advantage, go with the new Core 216 card. If you want to use AA a lot, especially higher AA modes, the 1GB Radeon HD 4870 is the better bet.

i just wish ati would fix the fan speed issue with the 4870 series. it's unacceptable to have it pegged at 16% max rpm, esp when the temps are pushing 80C. granted, that's not going to melt silicon, but it's still annoying.

and yeah, i fixed it in my profile...but i should not have had to.

No they are not, there was an interview with one of AMD's engineers and they said it was designed to run that hot and run perfectly fine so there was no need to up the fan speed (and the noise output)

Its not really an issue unless you have problems with the hot card warming the rest of your case

i'm planning on installing http://www.svc.com/hr-03gt.html plus a decent 120mm fan on it. still, it absolutely sucks to have temps that are designed to hit 80c+

How loud is the 48xx fan anyways? My 8800GT fan sounds horrible at max, but at least it slowly ramps up the speeds as temps go up since I flashed it with EVGA's bios. Normally it stays at 29% until it hits 100C.

Why can't ATI just have the fan speed slowly increase as temps go above idle?

My fan is locked at 33% and the core idles at 45c load is about 72c my 8800gt used to make this load noise a bit like a hoover when i turned the fan up, the 4870 fan isnt loud and makes a quiet whirring sound like a case fan

still, it absolutely sucks to have temps that are designed to hit 80c+

why? as long as there are no graphical glitches i really cant see the issue

and its designed for anywhere below 110c on the core, maybe a little higher on the memory if the core goes above 100c the fan speeds up to 50% and over 110c it goes to 100% which is 6000rpm and sounds like a jet taking off

I can't hear my 9800 GTX+ while idling, or rather turned off while not gaming.

The problem with GTX 260/216 is that its core clock is too low, only at 576MHz on stock. GTX 280 is clocked at 602MHz, while 4870 is at 750MHz. Wait for 55nm GT200 if you want nvidia cards on nvidia boards.

I hope they dont jack the prices up too much, they shouldnt as 55nm is a cheaper process.

longevity of the card beyond the one-year warranty mark?

there is a thermal point at which further increases in temps exacerbate wear and tear. besides that, i'm just a freak for cool and quiet :)

i study proteins for a living...folding@home might give my competition a leg up :P
