    How much is VISTA??

I am very confused. Is it $200 or is it $100??

    Look at these sites:

    and

By the looks of things the box vista comes in costs 100 dollars

and i have looked over the memoryexpress description several times and it doesn't look like its just an upgrade

One is retail version and the cheaper on is OEM. OEM version is subject to OEM license which means YOU are supposed to provide service to the computer you "sold" to yourself with this copy of Vista. I can't remember and recall all the detail between OEM and retail license, but somehow you won't feel any difference, since both require phone call to M$ to get activation after you change motherboard and reinstall.

ah young padawan, here my tale:

you can get an oem copy of vista basic, or an oem copy of vista home, or an oem copy copy of vista home premium, or an oem copy of vista 64, or an oem copy of vista...

...or you can get a retail version of vista basic, or a retail version of vista home premium, or a retail version of vista 64 or that are less cumbersomely locked down...

...or you could pass entirely and wait another 12-16 months for windows seven to see whether or not MS can bring a better product to market than XP.

entirely your choice, but OMG xp w/4gb*, an e6600 and a 4870 F-ing FLIES on every game i've ever tried it on. :)

      *yeah, i know.

in all seriousness, with windows seven now announced and in the pipes, it is approaching the time to absolutely pass on vista unless you have no other, no cheaper options.

        OEM = original equipment manufacturer

OEM Vista is supposed to be used by system builders who later sell an assembled computer. The only difference (IIRC) besides price is that you don't get Microsoft phone support in the OEM version (the system builder is supposed to provide the support).

you've never experienced drm infection-ware lock-down until you've tried vista.

Haha, go Retail if something horrible happens you can rest assured as Microsoft will help you, all you will have to do is call and things will magically work again. Plus you get a nice shiny box with the 32bit and 64bit versions of Vista that you can line up beside any of your other new purchased Microsoft Products.

But you will want to purchase Windows Vista Home Premium or Windows Vista Ultimate, stay away from Basic.

              http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...s/default.aspx

Make sure you install the 64bit version of Vista, or if you do decide to go OEM make sure you are getting the 64bit Edition so you will be ready for the future and won't have to start from a fresh install but will be able to upgrade (if everything goes according to plan) when the next Microsoft Operating System comes out in a few years.

It means that when you do an upgrade and install the same copy on a new system, then you have to call Microsoft to get another activation. It sucks, and that's why I don't feel right with EA's DRM. They usually will grant it as long as you don't run the same copy on two computers.

oh, so the only difference is the lack of Microsoft support and I will have to call if i want to re-install the OS.

Well chances are that i will not be installing this on any other computer and with windows 7 (hope they keep the name windows 7) coming out in the next year or so i don't think i would want to spend the extra 100 dollars unless it includes something that i might need more often.

I would much more rather get vista because to me XP has become well lame. I have wanted a new start and starting back on XP is not something that i would like. That and i want the cool effects!

it means vista and E.T. the extraterrestrial have much in common.

meh, if i was building a new p.c. and didn't have an institutional licensed copy of xp (no activation, unlimited reinstalls, no phoning home, updates w/out WGA), i might be tempted to give vista a shot, now that most of my legacy hardware has been replaced (old war horse of a laser printer, sony pda, and other handy stuff that vista would have thrown up over)

good luck, but i really, really hope MS has gotten the message now that the world has taken a pass on vista. "shiny" just ain't enough of an upgrade for $100, even if you've got PC enough to run it. I miss my Win2k :P
