E8400 temps

What the right temperature for a stock E8400? I just booted up and the BIOS said 55C, so I shut it down. This can't be right can it?

Booted up again, temps started at 51 and started going up again.

E8400 C0 SLAPL at stock
Stock Intel heatsink
P5Q SE
Voltages on auto

Should I try reseating the heatsink? Intel's pushpins suck.

that's ~15C higher than it should be on boot up, if your bios sensor is reporting the temps correctly. you could try reseating it, lapping the heatsink, or getting some better thermal paste.

I don't have any thermal paste on me right now since I used the Intel stock heatsink.

radioshack sells arctic silver equivalent...i don't remember what it's rebranded under.

You will probably need some new thermal paste and a reseat. One of the push pins may not be in tight and thus, temps aren't being properly dealt with.

yeah doesnt sound like a correctly fitted heatsink. If this isnt the case + ur cooler is on properly then try turning off the fan control in bios so it runs at 100% all the time then go about installing windows.
Once its done check the temp using a variety of different programs (core-temp, speedfan, intel TAT) and see if you can figure out if its just a false reading from the motherboard. If it is a false reading from the mobo then try updating the bios.
It could also be a faulty chip, i believe some of the first models of the 45nm cpus had dodgy readings so you may have been given some old stock?

Okay, I got a CoolerMaster Hyper TX2 ,some AS5 (shouldn't need it since the CM comes with paste preapplied), and another case fan. Temps are a bit lower now, 35-40, so I'm installing Windows to check the temps with Core/Real Temp.
