You probably have the IDE as primary and the SATA as secondary. Since SATA disks are hot swapping compatible, it probably sees it as removable storage.

Mixing IDE and SATA is usually not good.

cheers i'll see if i can get rid of that ide drive :), but wud it be alright if i set the sata to primary and ide to secondary?

Well, the Windows disk will always be primary. If i were you, i would ditch IDE and get a SATA disk. They are very, very cheap now.

Reinstall Windows and it should behave. IDE is so old now.

What exactly is the problem with mixing SATA and PATA?
I'm curious because I've been doing it for years.

Why is mixing IDE and sata not good? I stopped using IDE purely for cable convenience with SATA but i have never had any issues nor have any of my family.

Some chipsets hate it and it can really confuse software. I'm not saying it always causes trouble, but in some cases it does. I don't know exactly why.

I'm just going to add that I'm using IDE optical drives with SATA hard drives and I don't have any problems here.

SATA is hot swappable, like mentioned above. This means it can be removed while the PC is running, given that you take the proper steps in doing so. If your motherboard's SATA/RAID controller supports it, and you have the proper drivers installed, your hard drives will show up as removable hardware.

Yea, i too run IDE DVD drive and 4 SATA hard disks. But, when i mixed IDE drives with SATA, my computer would do funny things.

Anyway, with RAID you can't use IDE drives, so it's out of the question for me.

What do you mean you can't RAID with IDE/PATA? RAID has been around since before SATA. You might not be able to make an array with one PATA and one SATA... Actually, I think there might be RAID controllers out there that can do that, too.

You can't RAID when you have multiple SATA disks and some IDE hard disks.

It's a limitation on the ICH8R RAID chip for sure.

Right, but on a high end Raid controller, it may very well be possible.

On my mobo if I have my SATA set to RAID I can't also have SATA drives in IDE mode. However, my PATA drives are always in IDE mode, so I can have a SATA RAID and extra PATA drives on my one PATA channel.
