Gaming laptop

Hey everybody,

I am a relatively new member on the TGN forums, though Ive been lurking for a while. Basically im wondering if anybody has any ideas as to what laptop I should get that will hopefully last me a while but wont be too expensive. My budget is about $2,000 and the only real requirement is that I be able to play all the current games (dont care for crysis) at max or pretty close and will allow me to play for the next few years. Preferably im looking for a 17 inch screen and something that doesnt way 50 lbs.

Thanks in advance for anybody that is willing to help me out and drop a few ideas.

Wooah, dude i would rather advice you to look in the PC market, cheaper, better components, as well as more future proof than a laptop and easier to upgrade, will save ya a ton of $$$.

First off, a high end laptop will cost over 2K USD. Second overheating is a major issue on laptops. Then the 50lb point you made, all laptops from 15.4" and above pretty much lose their mobility status.

youll get a decent laptop for $2000, something like this you should be looking for

15.4"
Intel Core 2 duo 2.4ghz+
8800M GT or similar
2-4GB RAM

will probably be around 8-10lbs and hot, but if you want a gaming laptop your going to have to live with that

Yeah, i am really looking for a laptop mostly for college so im not bringing my entire pc home and back on vacation while as college and stuff. I believe gateway has one that is pretty good for 1500 or something but I am not sure. Also for the overheating typically a cooling pad will fix that. Anybody else have any other points?

That is pretty good, though I think im beginning to lean towards the gateway; http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1211587727985 ... I have read a few reviews where people have an issue or two, but then again what doesn't.

Anybody have any experience with this laptop in particular?

Gateway from Bestbuy pwns the Newegg one, i would advice for a Zalman NC2000 cooler, i use one for my Laptop.

Oh nice, that looks like an amazing cooler and is probably worth the $55-60 it will cost, though it doesn't appear as though it is sold in any physical stores but only online so he might have to wait a little bit to get ordered.

I went to the official website and it looks as though it does a great job of significantly cooling the laptop. Do you happen to have any numbers of your own that i can compare to the manufacturers numbers?

have you thought about just getting a micro pc with some decent components and a 15" lcd...and saving about a thousand dollars in the process...and enjoying your games?

laptops are more prone to failure, (usually) impossible to service by the user, present heating problems, and it is still not clear how bad the g82/86 fiasco will become. dell has already given their laptop customers with nvidia mobile chips an extra year of warranty service for the problem, and they weren't even part of the initial charge that nvidia took when it revealed the problem with HP.

if it has be mobile, then you have no choice but a lappy of course. but if you're just looking for a small footprint in a dorm room, then a micro is a much better choice, imho.

bonus: they don't all suck anymore :)

haha, funny you mentioned that. I was actually coming on here to say that i have decided to follow a different path then to get a laptop now. What I am going to do is build a nice desktop now, then in about 8 months or so when i am getting ready for college i am going to get one of the ultra portable laptops (what ever is good at the time) so i have my desktop in my dorm for gaming and then a laptop for notes/campus life.

Thanks for all the input. I have already begun putting components together and the only issue i am having is choosing a nice case xD

haha, funny you mentioned that. I was actually coming on here to say that i have decided to follow a different path then to get a laptop now. Great choice imo. i am thinking of doing the exact same thing although not a huge deky just a small Lan party case as i have my desktop back home.

that laptop just got a 9/10 rating from MaximumPC magazine. Of course its a 17" laptop which means don't consider it if you need something to carry around day to day.
