CPU:
What's the difference between the E7200 and the E5200? What would you recommend if money wasn't an issue?

E7200: 266 x 9.5 = 2.533ghz, 3mb cache
E5200: 200 x 12.5 = 2.5ghz, 2mb cache
Both: 45nm Wolfdale

PSU:
I'm kind of set on the HX520W now. Any last words before I order it?

Get the 520HX only if modular-ness is important to you. If it's not, get the 550VX which is cheaper, rated higher, and is single rail with more amps on the 12V rail.

Errr. I think you got the clock speeds backwards.

E7200: 266x9.5 = 2.53GHz, 3MB cache
E5200: 200x12.5 = 2.5GHz, 2MB cache

Picking one is hard. Both CPUs seem to have tremendous OCing potential. I say get the E5200 because a 33% increase is not worth a 33% increase in price. I know that sounds funny, but I want to pay for clockspeed, not cache. (if the E7200 were clocked 33% higher, it would be a different story)

No I got the multis mixed up, clock speeds are right. Sorry about that, I fixed it now.

Btw it would be a 50% increase in cache. But a 33% decrease. :p

neways, i was looking for 120mm fans that were quiet and moved air well, because i wanted to try overclocking a bit. only thing is, i couldn't find one on newegg that had good consistent reviews. i did see a xigmatek one that seemed ok, but i was concerned that the white leds would be really bright. do you guys have any recommendations?

and i was thinking that i'd probably need something better than the stock heatsink/fan that intel provides to overclock safely. any recommendations? if it comes with thermal compound already applied, should i rub it off and put on different thermal goop?

anyways, i did start ordering stuff, because of expiring deals and combo deals. this is what i have coming already:

case: antec 300
psu: corsair 520hx
memory: corsair 4gb (2x2gb) DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) (only $44 after combo deal + rebate!)

everything else is still kinda up for grabs.

I dont liek LED fans and wherever you can buy one there should be a cheaper LED-less equivilent. Personal choice though, if you liek that sorta thing and you want to have lights showing through the mesh on the front of the 300 then go for it.

In my case i have the extractor and intake as a 1400RPM Akasa fans then to cool the HDDs and CPU there is a 1800RPM xigmatic fan which is temp/speed contolled. The xigmatic ones are quiet when at low RPM but they do make a fuss at higher speeds.

if the motherboard has a fan controlling facility (which it definately will for the CPU fan at least) then you can always use this to limit the speed unless things are getting hot. Seeing as you only need 2 fans really to go on the inside of the front of the case and you only have one hard drive to cool, i would say just go with 2 reasonably low RPM fans for the case and one high RPM fan for the cooler (if the one you pick doesnt come with a fan).

i have actually just ordered all the parts for a friends computer and the setup is very similar to yours except with a lesser cheaper graphics card. I can take pics as i go and pass them onto you if it will help you along.

now that i have a little extra money, i don't mind spending an extra $20 for fans with leds.

anyways, you think low speed fans will be ok? i wasn't sure how much airflow i'd need if i wanted to oc. i was thinking something with 50+ cfm, but they were all rated at around 29 dba.

o and what's the difference between the xigmatek hdt-s1283 and s1284? will a 120mm fan fit in the asus p5ql mobo i was looking at?

o and one more questions. what does "memory standard" mean (for the mobo)?

For the CPU its better to have the that extra airflow + your garunteed to be albe to control the speed of it depending on the heat of the CPU as this feature is built into most motherboards. My cpu is usually runing an overclock and even then the fan stays at low RPM until have been playing COD4 for like 5-6hours straight or im rendering in 3dmax using raytracing.

I would have thought that for chassis fans, two low RPM ones (@800 - 1400rpm) would be plenty, it certainly is in my Dads 300 and that stays super chilled! Do a little bit of research into the motherboard and see if it has a speed controlling facility built into the bios because if it does then you may aswell get all high RPM fans and slow them down with that. Are you going to be replacing the included 140mm fan on the top at the back of the case and the 120mm one next to it with LED fans?

EDIT: just to note, the ratings that companies give out for volumes of fans are complete rubbish 90% of the time, its hard for me to give you direct recomendations as the main fans i use are not on newegg.

I think Alex mentioned earlier, the 1283 works a little more efficiantly then the newer revision however i think the differences are fairly negligable. As long as the ram doesnt have huge heatsinks on top of it you shouldnt have any problems fitting it.

This is also before the last few posts, so I haven't really taken that into account yet either. A few things that I'm thinking that I can switch out:
-Monitor (to get a larger screen to take advantage of the vid card)
-Mobo (I'm never sure about this...)
-Case (seems like rosewill isn't that great. I chose that one based on free shipping and decent reviews at the Egg.)
-Keyboard (Chose this one based on free shipping and price.)

About the hard drive... Should I get 2? I've heard that keeping your OS and other frequently used programs while storing all your other stuff on a separate larger HD is better for performance...

The Sapphire vid card that I was looking at before is now sold out, so I had to switch that out for the ASUS. What do you guys think?

Alright, so I bought the Antec300, Corsair 520hx and 2x2gb Corsair DDR2 and realized I wouldn't have enough to finish. That was about a month ago... Now I've got enough I think, so anything change in the tech world recently, or is this build still the best bang for the buck?

Looks good man, I have a similar setup and it runs all the latest games maxed (don't ask me about Crysis, never got it). Even the price tag on mine was similar, good finds.
