    Low end 9 series = fail?

    9400GT for $59, can get a 8600GT for that price.
    9500GT usually priced around $60-90, for a card that's in between the 8600 GT and GTS. You can get a 8800GS/9600GSO for $80 if you're lucky.
    9600GSO = rebranded 8800GS

    Why Nvidia? Why can't you pull something off like the 8800GT/9600GT again, instead of giving us cheap cards that are outperformed by your own 8 series?

    Low end cards aren't for people like you and me. They are for:

    1. cheap machines that don't have onboard graphics ;
    2. people who want 4-monitor display on their desk.

    Graphics card makers usually don't like to sale cheap cards. They want something people can afford but yet provide them with fat profit margin. "Mainstream" cards actually brings more profit and sell better. So don't even bother check low end cards, unless you want multiple (>2) monitor display or want to build an HTPC with P43 board.

      But 8600GTs are the same price as the 9400GT. I'm just saying you'd be better off buying an older card from Nvidia than the budget 9 series.

      For integrated replacements, there's always a few cards that are under $20.

        But, people might want a 9400gt over a 8600gt. Just because they want a video card, doesn't mean it's for gaming. The 9400gt would handle HD video better, would probably support 5.1 HDMI and HDCP, low power consumption, quiet etc...

          Release day pricing is always 5-10% more than it will be 1 or 2 weeks down the line to catch out the enthusiasts.

            Don't ATI cards have better video quality though? :p Not trying to start an ATI vs. Nvidia argument here, but I've heard that a few times.

              Not noticeably, no. It's merely a fanboy comment that has little or no fact to back it up :p

                My "feeling" is that the image quality of TV and other movies is better on my 3870 than onboard 8200. :p

                  Let's see ATI's low end 3400 series then:

                  What would the 9400/9500 offer over this, excluding gaming?

                    I have always preffered the actual overall image output whenever i have used an ATI card. I dont know why tbh it just seems more vibrant.

                      Don't get sucked into the higher numbers so easily and the misconception of the next "revolutionary generation of video cards" because the cold hard truth is that a new line of cards come out every 6-12 months with the same logo "revolutionary".

                      But what in fact only changes is minor upgrades between series. I was reading on a site earlier today about 8 and 9 series cards as well as the 260/280s because I thought I was left in the dust but turns out not entirely to be true.

                      According to the site I was on which I agree with, the 8 series was a revolutionary card because it offered DX10 and put DX9 to the farthest it could ever go. The 9 series had small upgrades, and again I can confirm it with the pricing (I bought my 8800gtx @ 750 or something and I see the 9800gtx come out worth 600)

                      The only real difference I believe was the pci-e 2.0 change. But hey, thats life.

                      My point is that you shouldn't have you're head stuck in this advertisement trap. When you're pc is 4 years old and lagging on the new era games you wish to play go build a new system with semi good parts because 3 months later what was the top of the line then is now half price (Like when I bought pc8500 ddr2 ram and 3 months later ddr3 comes out and slashed the prices I paid by more than half - I learned my lesson not to go full out next time.)

                      fact is: comparing the popular cards like 88 vs 98, there will be a small change in performance but is it really worth to shlt you're pants over? No.

                        My 8800GT was "top of the line" when I bought it, but now its old tech... but it still runs Crysis fine. :p

                            Same with my 8800 GTS... it was the third best card available when I bought it and it's way behind now It still plays all the games I want on all high though so it doesn't matter much...

                              ^ pretty much right :) i say if your card playst and plays it well then stick with ur current gfx.

                              Hence why i made that thread before asking bout my 88GTX.
