I recently got a dell laptop from my aunt for college. It came with an OS disc with Windows Vista XP1 on it. Even though it says its for dell only, can I still use this to install vista on my gaming PC? It would be pretty sweet if I can get vista on there too lol...
Is it possible?

Re: Is it possible?
Probably not. Dell have their own modified disks that usually don't work on non-Dell PC's.
I tried installing Windows XP on my gaming PC from my old Dell, but it simply gave me BSOD's when installing. Once i downloaded a retail XP disk, it worked fine.
Oh, the Dell disk is also OEM. -
Re: Is it possible?
Dell Windows keys are linked to the BIOS. Replace something major in the Dell and you might be stuck without a working key.
So I don't think it would work.Comment

That sounds like what HP did to my computer...I got a new motherboard and had to reinstall windows with my dad's copy. D:Comment

Re: Is it possible?
IIRC, OEMs can only supply customers with Repair/Restore disks now, that restore the PC to it's factory state. They can't give you a full copy of the OS. This means you won't be able to use the disk on anything but the dell PC.
And even if they did provide you with a copy of Vista, it'd be tied to the original PC. Also, you're only allowed to have your copy installed on one PC at a time.Comment
