HELP! somthing screwed my laptop

well yeah, but its not my laptop its parents bla blah blah.
i was quite happy on the internet then some ramdom program called antivirus 2008 installed it self on my laptop! it took my about a hour to remove all the files and get rid of it but now its left me with this!

so im like Zomfg at all that and i cant change it!

there is no desktop bar to change the background....
so could some nice person help out another who is panicing like a ****

This happened on my dad's pc, i think we might have fixed it using a programme called "smitfraudfix", but it was a while ago so it might have been something else.

spyware. pull off everything important and use the factory restore.

Game Over

Backup everything, reformat, restore from the factory image or do a clean install with the disc that came with the laptop. Once you have that installed install Avast, Kaspersky or Bitdefender. Then scan all the files you backed up before moving them back over to the freshly reformatted machine. Only move what is necessary do not move system files, etc.

Not at all. The only time you really need to re-format is when you have a persistent virus that installs as a rootkit.

Download Spybot S&D, Avast and CWShredder. Run them all and see what the outcome is. Spybot S&D should deal with Smitfraud software anyway

And, learn this lesson, don't ever download anti virus programs you've never heard of. Look for legitimate reviews before downloading anything and if in doubt, ask on forums.

The only way to be truly safe is to reformat, as it may remove the nagging part of the program but normally the keyloggers and droppers remain.

Keyloggers and trojans may go as deep as system32, but do not use rootkit installs. True, a reinstall would be better, but for a lot of people it's too much bother and the issue can be fixed with simple software.

ok guys, thanks for all ideas, but i have been on holiday over the last week or so and my house was broken into and the lappy was stolen with my pc and other crap. :|

"don't ever download anti virus programs" didnt do it on purpose :|

at least i got nothing to worry about now??

Hopefully you will find out what/who has it or get something to replace it and have not lost anything too important.
