While all passwords are encrypted and salted, it's recommended that you change your password here when you can.
Well if I have to do anything with the BIOS, I'm probably going to be out of luck. But I've installed new RAM, a new GPU, and a new PSU without any problems.
there's a 90%* chance you can drop a faster cpu in there and everything will be hunky dory.
i would just take the time to confirm it. also, if your hsf is anything like the ones i've torn apart in my department as our dells fail, one after the other, you might want to be sure your hsf can dissipate the required watts. the design i'm familiar with is a copper base/single heatpipe appartatus with a sparse number of fins mated to a plastic exhaust that is serviced indirectly by a fan at the rear. that's fine for northwoods all the way thru sempron and some 64's, but when you start loading volts onto a proc the only real solution is a direct cooling solution.
i would call/email dell tech support line, depending on how much they're going to charge you, and get a solid answer as to whether your model will accept the cpu upgrade you're planning. that answer may even be in their KB (or whatever passes for a KB at dell).
just like all motherboards that were advertised to support P4's were pin-compatible but didn't all support Presc(h)ott processors, it's possible your socket AM2 upgrade may be not be supported by your mobo. I don't want to see you make the same mistake i did and go to all the trouble of installing it to find out your mobo doesn't support it. flying chips and curse words are good for no one :P

pay close attention to the version of that 6000+...the 89W one is different from the 125W one
ah, thank you very much. I actually just made a topic on their forums asking if I could put a 6000+ in, but you've answered the question right there. I can't seem to find an 89W 6000+ on ncix or tigerdirect, so I'll have to look closely at the 5400+ before I make a decision.

was exactly what I was looking for. In fact, that person has the exact same setup that I had before I did some upgrades. so thanks again
but would it have to be exactly 89W? I'm looking at this 5200+ 2.7ghz which is 65W. would that work, too?
my guess is that the 125W 6000+ would work, but you'd have to use a better heatsink/fan than dell stock. from what i read, the bios/am2 chipset is probably* smart enough to adjust the volts accordingly
same guess applies to the 5200+, except it's a much cooler processor, so no need to exchange hsf's. the only problem here would be if the bios is hardwired to provide enough volts to run an 89W processor, it could overvolt (fry) a 65W processor if it doesn't adjust it automagically.
*but you'd really want to consult an am2/dell guru (which i am not) for your answer--their official answer was limited to the three 89W ones linked in the forums. if you want to be perfectly safe, i'd limit my options to those.
and yes, 89W 6000+'s are harder to find than fries near a fat man.
