I would also advise you ship with UPS.
Normally if I ship a PC to someone I will put all electronic parts hard drives, graphics cards, RAM, etc. in static bags. Get the nice big foam pieces to keep the case from moving and to seperate the seperate parts from the other parts if the person wanted to put things together themselves.

If not I plug everything in except for the connections, the secure it with the foam and bubble wrap in a high quality reinforced box for full towers or medium towers. So when it shows up the owner is like what is that because the box is massive.

Kick it and you will injure yourself :).

What about the hard/CD drives, if you have those easy install sleds for them you might want to take them out, I personally wouldn't trust the them to stand the shipping.

Generally those have screw holes I think and they tend to be decently strong.

On my case, there's 2 little plastic things per drive, you insert little round pegs into the screw holes, one on each side of the drive, and then slide the drive in.

Yeah if you have a case like this you definitely either want to remove the drive or screw them down. Those tooless cases are convenient but sacrifice a lot of holding strength.

while it's unnecessary to completely strip out the stuff, i would take out the processor, remove the graphics card, and take out the memory, put these in anti-static bags and ship them separately or carry them with.

the heatsink (even a stock one) and a fast gpu with a giant hsf can generate enough cantilever force to break off with a sufficient jolt. i'd take the memory out just because i had the thing open at the time.

i prefer DHL if i really want to ship something with kid gloves. UPS treats packages like muggers treat granny in my experience.

if your hard drive won't wiggle, it's probably safe to ship in the case.

RAM and processor should be fine, RAM is held pretty tight, and LGA 775 has the little lever/cover to hold in the CPU so it should be fine.

Definitely take the CPU cooler off if it is a tall, aftermarket one. Coolers can be damn heavy and as Whomper said, with enough of a jolt, they can rip a chunk of motherboard out.

I recommend shipping the Dell way :). Which is everything is screwless, wrapped, etc. and for the RAM and heatsinks are secured by a cover that keeps them from moving. Then there is an extra box with the keyboard, one for the mouse, cds, operating sysem, etc. one for the cables tied and put into plastic bags, all put into a larger box or shipped separately. There is also a piece inside the case that keeps the graphics cards from moving, there is a clip for the outside of the cards where you plug yoru DVI monitors into that keeps it from moving and one more on the inside that makes sure nothing can move.
