Pentium Dual Cores

Anyone have any experience with them? Are they good enough to play modern games?

The E5000s are coming out soon and they're based on 45nm Wolfdale and have double the cache of the E2000s, and they should be pretty cheap ($85 I think), so it looks like it would be a pretty good upgrade from a Pentium D.

E7200 will be $113, and the E7300 will be $133.

I'm worried that it might not be future-proof enough or might bottleneck a future graphics card upgrade. Will it bottleneck a 4870? How about a 9600GT or 8800GT?

No they will be fine, for any of the cards mentioned you can also stick an aftermarket cooler on top of it and get a massive overclock like 4ghz

the only bottleneck might be a game like supreme commander where the graphics arent great but the physics and animations are massive consumers of performance

well seeing that we both have pentium D's right now. (BUT NOT FOR LONG) you can play the game but cannot play most games to thier potential. you need to upgrade like me.

I have a E2180. I like it. I OC'ed it to 2.9GHz on stock voltage (45%). I'm running 3GHz on 1.3v as my 24/7 settings. (I could prolly lower the voltage). The highest stable I've ever gotten was 3.285GHz (365x9).

As for performance, I think people often have a more powerful CPU than they really need. There's an article (few months old now. A really good read imo) at Tom's Hardware about different CPU & GPU setups. A 3GHz E2160 could match the performance of a E6750. The E2160 cost less than half of the E6750. These CPUs arn't slow by any means!

From my experiences, I think the E2xx0 and E5xx0 series will be great buys. OC them by 50+% and you're good to go. I wouldn't be afraid to pair my E2180 with a 8800GT! :shock: Seriously.

Yeah, it's a well known fact that the vast majority of games (with the exception of flight sims and MMOs are GPU rather than CPU bound.

If I have enough money when the E5200 comes out, assuming I don't need SLI/CF, will use DDR 800 RAM, and probably won't OC, what would be a good motherboard for it?

Asus P5K Deluxe.

You can get a P5Q if you can afford it, but the P5K is just as good.

i would very much rather have something that is more powerful than i need it to be rather than have ANY kind of issues with it. i really dont care about paying extra money for something that i spend alot of time on.

Different opinion here. But it's cool. :thumbsup:

I like having the best price to performance ratio possible. Buying "extra" (so to speak) increaces the price with little performance gain. I try to get exactly what I need and no more. (Futureproofing included)

Nehalem's coming out soon so all our stuff will be obsolete (not really, but just not new, you know what I mean) by the end of the year anyways. :p

How well do you think a E5200 + 9600GT/8800GT/4850 will do?
