Can XP detect 4GB of RAM?

    Hello all!

Well i recently purchased a 2GB stick to go in my laptop with my other 2GB stick, so that it totals to 4gigs. I right clicked properties my comp, and it says 3.0GB and on DxDiag is says 3070MB availiable.

The windows on your laptop is currently 32-Bit and you need to be running a 64-Bit OS in order to recognize your 4 gigs.

    Hope that made sense

32bit OS's will only a maximum of roughly 3.25gb due to the way memory is reserved for I/O devices. You can force PAE's, but i'm not sure how or whether they work.

      You'll need 64bit

P.S. If you are at Newcastle Uni, you should be able to apply for free Microsoft software. That's how i got my Vista Business 64bit free.

Almost any Uni with decent computing facilities has this. If you haven't been told about it already, ask the IT tech guys for more info.

Yup, i believe it's called "Microsoft Software Assurance".

It's basically MS's way of making sure you use their software in the future, not that ghastly open source stuff :p

Tell me is it a good idea to buy a Vista OS 32Bit on my Rig not laptop or should i go 64bit?

laptop problem is solved thanks to dr0matik ;D yes i do have a 32 bit, man was i a nub not realizing that lol cause i already know that 32 bits wont recognize my 4gigs as 4 but as 3.5gb.

Yeh 64bit is ok now since most of the driver issues and whatnot have been sorted out.

im using 64 bit xp and contrary to popular belief 99% of applications work for it the only two i cant get to work is windows live (windows suck balls), and rome total war but you can bypass the OS check and it works fine after that

                    supports 1000gb+ of ram
