    Free 9800GT's!

    If you already have an 8800GT that is.

      9800GT.

      The point is that Nvidia is rebranding old 8800GTs into 9800GTs and just flashing the card's BIOS to read as "9800GT".

        NVIDIA is doing that a lot recently.

        8800 GS => 9600GSO
        8800 GT => 9800GT

        I guess that there will be more naming game from NVIDIA.
        8800GTS => 9800 GTS?
        8800GTX => 9800 GTXO?

        Naming game is one thing, but why don't they add Hybridpower?

          Oh and I thought 9800GT was supposed to have a die shrink to 55nm, whatever happened to that?

            Probably will be named as 9800GT+ and came from crippled GTX+.

              I doubt there will be a 9800GTX/9800GTXO. (I hope that was a joke. If so :laugh:)

              Serisouly though, I think hybridpower needs some kind of additional... er.. something. Else, I'm sure they'd add it. The 8800GT probably can't support it in its current form.

              As for renaming the same products, I think this is a good move on nVidia's part. It's terribly confusing having multiple series on the market at the same time. nVidia currently has 3!. (8xxx, 9xxx, GTX 2x0) At least there isn't three products released under the same name.... *cough* 8800GTS.... *cough*

                Indeed. Maybe they should collect unsolde G80 cores and repackage them as 9800 GTOMG, GTWTF or GTLOL.

                    Lol, i'd be interested to know what benefits i would have by flashing my 8800gt to a 9800gt? Would it just be voltages and speed or is there hardware tucked away that can be unlocked?

                      Probably nothing other than a new name

                      i expected the 9800gt to at least be a shrink from 65nm to 55nm its kinda pathetic that they have to rebrand cards to sell them

                        Are shops going to be issued with orders to tipp-exx a "9" onto every 8800GT box?

                          Yeah, you'll probably gain literally nothing. ('cept for bragging rights :hmm:)

                          The 8800/9800GT will eventually get shrunk down to 55nm. I hope they sell it as a 9800GT+. If not, the 9800GT you bought could be either version. I think it's terrible when you order a product and you have to hope you get the good kind.

                            65nm to 55nm isnt a big deal at all anyway

                            you might get 25-50mhz more out of the core if your overclocking and maybe, 5 watts less power usage but thats about it

                              Actually, it does support HybridPower and it is priced the same to 8800GT. Good for me, since I'm the only one on the forum who is using an Nvidia board that enables this.
