    [GUIDE] How to fix your cd drive if it becomes totally unresponsive (vista)

    So on newer computers running vista (almost always laptops), sometimes the cd drive just completely dissapears from "my computer" and becomes totally unresponsive. This usually seems to happen after installing Windows updates.

    If you look in the device manager, your cd drive should be listed with having a problem loading drivers. If you try to reinstall drivers, an error message will pop up saying that the most recent drivers for your device is already installed.

    If you have all of the above symptoms, most likely you just need to follow a simple fix by deleting a few registry keys.

    *Warning, when navigating the windows registry please be careful and don't touch anything you don't need to!!!! One time I deleted a main folder on a computer at school and the OS stopped functioning!!

    Anyway, lets get started...

    Click your start bar and type in regedit in the search bar and press enter. The regedit window should popup.

    Navigate to this location, double check and triple check to make sure you navigated to the right location because there are many other locations with similar lettering.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    Assuming you made it to the right section, you should see Upper Filters, and Lower Filters. Go ahead and delete these both, then reboot your computer.

    After your computer has finished booting, go back to the device manager, right click on your drive and, if the option is there, click enable.

    Your cd/dvd drive should be functioning correctly now!!
