Looking for overclocking guide.

Since I'm going to be upgrading my system with a Q6600, DDR2 800 RAM, and a ASUS P5Q-E motherboard I thought I would try some overclocking. I'm really interested in overclocking the new CPU when I get it. I'm looking for a really nice in-depth guide on overclocking which includes talking about the RAM as well. It's my first time overclocking, so I need a nice guide so I don't screw anything up.

I'm going to stay with air cooling, so I need one that doesn't involve water cooling. I'm probably not going to overclock it to 3.6GHz, like is said to be possible on air, but maybe to around 3.2-3.4GHz, depending on how things go.

If anyone has a nice one and they would like to share, I would really appreciate it. Also share some tips with me on things I should keep in mind, like things I should avoid or not do.

And, if anyone has the same guide on overclocking an 8800GT XXX, please post that up as well.

The first thing you should try is RAM overclocking. Because you can only overclock an Intel system by raising FSB clock, and it also increases RAM clock. Try to overclock RAM from 800 to 1066 (1:1 FSB:RAM ratio) and set latency to 6-6-6-18. If everything runs fine, than try 5-5-5-18. If RAM overclocking passed tests, set RAM back to 800 and maintain the latency settings. Now you can start to raise FSB. You should be able to raise it from 1066 to 1500 without much trouble. Now your RAM is at 1125, which is a bit high, and we're not sure if you can run at that speed. So drop FSB:RAM to 3:2, and RAM will run at 1000 with previous latency settings. If it goes, then you're at 3.375GHz.

If your RAM doesn't go that high, then try FSB:RAM 2:1 so that RAM runs at 750MHz with stock latency. In this case, you might want to hit FSB a bit higher, so that RAM can run at 800 or a bit higher, depending on stability test result.

That's the RAM I'll be getting with the Q6600 and P5Q-E. From some of the guides I read so far, I thought I would leave the RAM on auto and not mess with the ratio.

Can I ask why I should raise the FSB from 1066 all the way to 1500, and not 1333? Also, will the Q6600 be fine at 3.375GHz with a Tuniq Tower 120?

Alex, is that GFX OC guide that you will be putting up be general as in any Nvidia 8*** card?

May i use it on my 88GTX?

It will be for ATI and Nvidia cards. However, there may be slight differences, but nothing huge.

I will also be doing a BIOS Vmod guide for 8xxx cards... (if i find a working floppy )

You can use a USB drive to boot if you can find a bootable floppy image file.

When i write the guide, i will use RivaTuner and ATI Tool.
