      Buying budget PC parts is not a good Idea especially when it comes to the PSU.

            umm guys i dont get this why tf is some psu running at 75% load going to blow up? thats rediculous. this kind of crap wouldnt get through R@D

            my question is what is the real caus of the failure? is it faulty wiring? or can the psu not reliably output a certain amperage over time? does it get too hot? wtf is this.

            and then why does a corsair psu not fail in this way?

              They deliberately put too much current on one rail. PSUs have many rails. There are 3.3V, 5V and 12V rails. A lot of high rating PSUs have multiple 12V rails. If you put too much current on one rail and overload it, it simply fails. The failure usually are due to MOSFET burnt out, or a capacitor failure. The total power is measured by maximum output of all rails. There are a few high rating PSUs built with single 12V rail.

              The reason for multiple rails is lower component cost. Imagine a MOSFET can endure 12V/55A, that's impressive, and so is the cost.

                Yup, as Avalanche said.

                However, before you say "it's going to break if you overload one rail", that's not necessarily true. A good PSU obviously won't operate properly when a rail is overloaded, but it shouldn't blow up like that.

                Also, good PSU's such as the Corsair have powerful rails which can help prevent it being overloaded.

                    Suppose your computer runs at 220W when playing BF2142.

                    P=IV.

                    P=220W.

                    V=12V.

                    I=18.3333A.

                    Now consider you're running two 8800 GT in SLI with an overclocked Q6600 plus a full load of case fans, total peak power usage may well above 300W. Having 55A maximum safe operation limit is good.

                      i looked at a 12v 120mm fan one time and at 12v its running at 120mA or something small like that
