1 TB one is really amazing hard drive, but the 500GB one is faster than 74GB raptor by how much? 200kB/s? 0.5MB/s? Consider that 74GB raptor is one generation ahead, platter improvement on speed is indeed not very significant.

And SATA transfer speed is important, especially when running RAID 0. There are some cases where hard drive cache algorithm can correctly predict what to read before a command is sent, and higher bus speed and cache side can make things a lot different.

Compare HD103UJ to HD502IJ, the difference is mostly cache size, and otherwise the two are the same except probably number of disks. The manufacturers are not very open about the exact formation of the drives, and they have good reasons for that. Given all the possibility I can think of, ST3320613AS is still so fast, which breaks every single rule I came up with. So it still looks more like Voodoo to me.
