    Ping Spikes

Wow, two threads in one day. :hmm:

Ok, when playing BF2, I get these ping spikes sometimes. I'll be playing normally and then my ping will slowly climb to 600+ and climb back down. The whole thing normally lasts about 20-30 sec.

I have no clue what could be causing this. It may be out of my control. Reason being that I'm ok 95% of the time with firefox, flashget, itunes, and xfire running in the background. So I don't think it's my computer. Just now, I got kicked twice from a server that I have a good ping with. Normally it's not this bad. Most of the time I get one or two and then they go away. But today I had like five or six in one round. My only idea is that it might have to do with the ISP's load. It's 9pm EST here meaning 6pm PST on Saturday night, which means this is probably the heaviest load of the week. Connection?

And how much of all that stuff autoupdates at randoms intervals?
Step 1 in solving the problem would be to play without all that running in the background.

Or if you fell up to it, try running WireShark to see what happens when you get these spikes.

      Agreed.

But I'm going to try WireShark first because I'd rather not close my apps before I play. If only I could figure out what all that data means....?

      Code:
      6349	190.239562	202.22.227.100	192.168.1.103	UDP	Source port: 21793 Destination port: 28742

It means you are trying to talk to someone in New Caledonia

The lower window should have more info, but basically 192.168.something = you and the other IP is your target.

You can then use www.dnsstuff.com to see who owns the IP.

wireshark will show you what happens, but it wont tell you what it means

          Ok, thanks again.

WireShark is too confusing. I think I may have found the problem ip, but all I know is that the server is in Oakland CA. :|: That doesn't tell me what my computer is doing to access it which doesn't help me at all.

So forget that for a sec. I'm going to just try closing everything when I play and see if that works.
