I got a virus on my home machine yesterday and ran a full Norton scan with no joy. I then contacted them and they charged me 100 dollars to fix a problem their virus scanner couldn't find.

It was fixed remotely, so here's the crash course I got in virus removal:

1. Turn off system restore
2. Back up your registry
3. Go into the windows directory and sort by date modified.
4. Anything modified today that's a DLL or EXE, search for the entries in the registry and delete them.
5. Restart the machine
6. See if you still have a problem
7. If yes, repeat from step 3 with Program Files
8. If no, delete the DLL and EXE files.
9. Turn system restore back on
10. Say have a nice day and sign off.

Since it cost me that much to fix a virus they knew all about but haven't protected anyone against (Prolly to earn more mullah), I though it might be useful to others.

AVG is the way. Its all ive ever used and i dont recall ever having a virus!

That because Avg is dire and cant find half the stuff. You should of just ran CC cleaner on your registry simon.

told you about this couple of weeks ago simon , and sorry i didnt post what to do , usually the sytem restore keeps virus /rambits for start up and also local temp folders/and app-data avg seems better for the now never so far have i had a undetected virus.

I know, but I expected Norton to find and fix the problem. When it didn't, I expected Symantec to fix it for free. I guess I was being naive. When my Norton subscription is up, I will go back to McAfee (Which never let me down).

As to CC cleaner, etc, I ran about 6 different tools before I contacted them. Including that. Malaware's software was the only one that detected anything, but it couldn't fix the problem.

I can't imagine the kind of person that makes viruses...

Use NOD32 and you won't have to worry about **** programs nor **** service when the **** program doesn't work properly.

I usedto use nod32 (and the ESET smart security) but it has a tendancy to screw up home networks and connection sharing

Now looking for something new but in all fairness i generally dont have a problem going without one.

Never had a problem with it, ever. It just runs away in the background... although as you say, I wouldn't even have a problem going without one because I'm not one of those compulsive people who feel the urge to click on every stupid link that they're presented with. I think NOD32 has flagged up something once, which was starforce, when I was trying to install TMF.

i used AVG but i was told the 'free' service is going abit poop as they want to push you towards buyin their product, good Anti-Virus tho, im currently using Avast

i use avg, awesome anti virus. use their spyware to ^^
