How about some advice

I was wondering if any of you have switched to a new high power gaming rig from a minimum rig and if it made a big difference. In other words was it worth it. Right now I am running just the bare minimum setup with the lowest rated vid card for the game gforce 6600 (not even the gt) and one gig of ram. I have to operate with everything turned off and minimum resolution to even have 30fps. I know I can't see far objects (targets) clearly and I think that is a disadvantage, also I seem to get killed by guys who apparently see me long before I see them, such as turning a corner. When on kill cam they are seeing and shooting me when they hadn't even appeared from my pov. What can you tell me? Thanks:P

it makes all the difference ive gone through a few my self recommend 3.0 ghz dual processor or equiv core 2 duo 1.86 and up i use about 1gb ram with settings just on game so i would say at least you need two gig ram graphics youll allways get away with 512 mb graph card but it is about the graph cards gpu speed ie 300 mhz 400mhz or like the nvidia 8600 8800 upto 700mhz and memory clock speed how fast it reads and writes graphics

FINALLY good internet connection ping ping is everything lol this is when people kill you b4 you see them time delay the higher the ping the longer it takes for your bullets to reach them better to have lower ping around 50 is average

Having a decent rig that can run CoD4 on medium settings with 125fps and not too much "lag" on a high resolution is key

I'm not sure what components you should look into buying PCDoc or Oldbury or someone else will be able to help you tho!

Even with low ping I can literally get killed by an opponent who is invisible in front of me and then as I fall down there he is way out in the open where I could have got him if I had seen him. Maybe this is just something that is inherent in a computer game and we have to live with it. Since my setup is always on the low end of what's required with these games (I've never had an opportunity to have a really good rig when the game comes out, and by the time I can afford to upgrade the next version of the game comes out and I want to play that!) I have no idea how it is to have a top line setup when it counts. Hence some of my dumb questions. This time however I want to build one with top stuff and get ahead of the curve for a few years. For instance-right now I still have an AGP motherboard so the best GPU cards won't fit.

Well, I was in your shoes back in December when I started playing in the BFE 17.5 campaign, or at least, close to your shoes. I had an Asus mobo, two nVidia 6600 GT's in SLI, a gig of HyperX low-latency memory, and I had an Athlon 64 3000+ processor.

I had to play the game at pretty low settings and even then, it was choppy at times, even though I had a great Internet connection. It was a lot like what you describe. I was getting killed before I even saw who was shooting at me.

So, I saved up, sold off the components of my old system and bought a bundle deal from TigerDirect.com. I got an Intel Quad-core 6600 CPU, 2 Gigs of Corsair low-latency memory and a decent XFX motherboard for $380.

I then decided to treat myself to a BFG 8800 GTX OC2 graphics card and let me tell you...it made a HUGE difference. The graphics in-game, especially in the single-player game, are amazing. I can't believe what I was missing before.

Especially in multi-player, now I can see people as they are killing me. :lol:

Seriously, it has definitely helped my game play. Being able to see farther and more clearly than I could before has made a big improvement in my experience.

I'm not saying you need to go out and buy a $450 graphics card...but they recently released a 512 MB 8800 GT for around $200 or $250 I think. If you can get a bundle deal on a mobo, CPU and memory and then get a decent graphics card, you should be in good shape. I definitely recommend trading up from the AGP to the PCIe.

Oh, but one other thing to keep in mind if you upgrade your components, make sure you have a power supply that can handle what you put in your rig.

Take it form someone whose ping is around 250 normally - Ping makes all the difference. Search the web and there are sites to help you both minimize your ping and maximize your FPS.

So you only have an AGP mobo....so what ? Doesn't mean you can't get a good card. You may think that a Pci-e mobo is what you need and if you are thinking of upgrading most parts of a PC then yes get one...BUT...there are some good AGP cards on the market. My old rig (the one my son uses) is running an Ati X850XT Platinum Edition AGP card (IIRC Sneaky, I think it was, had one a few camps back too), that I paid about £330 :o for when it came out and my son runs CoD4 on mostly mid/high settings, with his fps maxed out at 333 (he is a bit of a jump freak) doesn't mean he gets a regular 333 though...mainly if he looks at the sky before he jumps.

So they are still around and that don't seem to bad a price tbh, although I myself don't really like buying used electronics. Just giving you an idea of what you could get for not a bad price.
