COD4 gameplay is crashing my PC

I just got my computer repaired because I had a bunch of corrupted data on it (video from digital camera that was stored on it), got that taken care of, and also upgraded to a GeForce 7900 and an Envision 19" LCD widescreen monitor. I got the updated drivers for both the monitor and the graphics card, and now I can't play COD4 online for more than a minute without the game crashing. It's only during gameplay.

    (...there's drivers for a monitor?)

Check the temperature of your video card under load (using ATITool's 3D cube and temperature monitor) and see if it exceeds 70°C. If so, then that's the source of the problem.

I got my video card temperature down to an average of 55 degrees or so, but the game crashed a few minutes into gameplay. There was lots of dust in the fan which I cleaned out.

Anyways, I know it's not a COD4 problem, but my video card, but if anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate them. I'm not going to try other games now since I likely know the result.

What size mb does the card have? Also check your directx settings in game to see if it isn't at dx9, if it is then you might have to scale back to dx7. Casue if the game is the only thing that crashes with your new video card that what comes to my mind. For myself I have a Nvidia 6600 GS 256mb and can't run CoD2 under dx9 without my game crashing. hope this will help you.

yeah , defo make sure u aint running in directx 9 mode for a 7900, also try the omega drivers as well, they can offer just a little more in the way of power from the card.

            Couple of questions:

When you say crash, is it a freeze/lockup where you can't do anything but unplug (or hold the power button in) or is it a crash with an error message/similar?

I can help you if it's the freezing part.

Also, is it just multi-player or both SP & MP?

It freezes the computer like you said. There's no signal to the monitor, sound still runs for a little bit, but the computer's unresponsive.

I'm pretty sure DirectX10 is running. How do I scale it back to 7?

Also, my video card is back up around 65 degrees C.

I get random freezes and crashes while playing COD4
Rivatuner, ATiTool, LCD monitor tools, NTune (NVidia Control Panel), ASUS GamerOSD, ASUS SmartDoctor and possibly any other hardware monitoring program installed and running when trying to play COD4 could possibly be the cause.
Either close these applications or uninstall them and the problem should go away.

No, I will not uninstall Rivatuner ever in my life.

I'm pretty sure that's the issue. I had even with COD2 since it also uses PB. The issue is a conflict in memory access with PB and the add-on products like riva-tuner. If you want it to go away, turn it off. If you can't live without your riva-tuner then have fun with the freezes. There are many other programs that can also cause the conflict.

Can't back rev COD4 to DX7. You can use DX9 but there is no DX7 option w/COD4.
