Neways stumbled upon some good news here (N4G.com) loks like the battle is heating up btwn ATi and Nvidia, as well as Intel is really trying to push itself in the gfx business.

I believe at the moment is goes like this (regarding FPS, and not money)

HD4850 = 9800GTX
HD4870 > GTX260, and sometimes HD4870 = GTX280

And then later on
HD4870X2 > GTX280

And then when you bring money into it, ATI >>>> nvidia. So unless nvidia drastically drop the prices of the GTX200 series, ATI will definately be a better buy. Right now the HD4850 and 9800GTX are roughly the same price.

Wanted to ask. Is it worth upgrading from a 8800GT XXX to a HD4870 at a 1280 x 1024 resolution? If not, what resolution is best for the HD4870?

Hmmm the 4870 is about $310 on Newegg, but the GTX 280 is $650. And I've seen a Fry's ad with a 4850 for $180.

Tomeis, when you say 4870x2 do you mean crossfire 4870s or two chips on one card?

NO!! 8800GT is already pretty overkill for 1280x1024. You can buy a 24in monitor and still be ok with your 8800GT. If you really want to upgrade, 24in LCD (1920x1200) + 4870 is your best bet for the money. Anything less isn't that big of an upgrade. However, I don't recommend doing that. If you wanted to upgrade something get a 22in monitor which can be had for less than $250. You'll still have plenty of GPU power with the 8800GT.

4870 is better choice considering the price to performance ratio, why pay $650 for 4 FPS more in Crysis for the 280, when you could get the same almost as good performance FPS wise for $309? Its like 50% cheaper and only 5% slower, not worse just 5% slower. I mean speed matters in games don't get me wrong, just not for $350 more. Might as well get 4870 twice and Crossfire it, to get way better performance for the price of one 280.

Your right there... the 8800 is good enuf for now but most people build their rigs thinking about future gaming, like me, i usually end up building a machines that don't need upgrades for at least 2 years.

Plus the card has HDMI with 7.1 audio (Nvidia doesn't have cards out on the market with audio yet), a card that support DX10.1, has a build in BluRay accelerator and GDDR5. Whats not to love?

Yes, I'm an ATi fan boy(ATi Radeon 4870 FTW!), I admit, but consider what I have said maybe it will help you choose.

[Off topic] I'm building my machine now and I'm just waiting for the 4870 to hit newEgg I will defiantly buy it. I was considering the 3870 X2, two weeks ago but I have come to the conclusion that I can always could buy a second 4870 in the future and crossfire, and a single 4870 is good enuf for today's games.

Nope. Not worth the money, if you were building a new computer, sure, but the 8800GT will be a good card for a while.

What if I were to buy a 22", maybe 24", monitor and still continue using my 19" monitor? Will getting a 4870 for dual monitors be worth it or still not so much?

ATI really has a better advantage here, low pricing, the prices i saw in Scan were low, and GDDR5!!! not 3 like the GTX2##.

I am going to wait for a version possibly with larger RAM 1gb card!!!!
