    video card noise

I just noticed today, for the first time, that my video card seems to make a high pitched buzzing/humming sound when its under a lot of stress (sometimes in crysis, or when running a stress test).

My first thought was dust, but then why does it only make the noise when its under a heavy load?

The fan montor could be going. Under load, heat increases and thus the fan spins faster. I think the motor might be whining a bit. If it gets really bad, RMA or buy a Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 Rev 2 for £15

If you have a 8800gt make sure you have the latest card BIOS. Early revisions had issues whereby the fan controller in the card didn't work so you have to flash the graphics cards BIOS for it to work properly.

I had to do it with my new EVGA 8800gtsc

Some versions of 8800 GT are very loud normally, don't know which ones though

Just follow the other guy's advices :p

I noticed this around last year, whenever I OCed a card beyond its stable amount it would make a high pitched whine in 3D mode. It's not the fan or the fan controller (I have the fan controller lead unhooked on my 8800 so it runs at 100% constant), it's something else and I have no idea. Some kind of oscillator.

                  Re: video card noise

it has nothing to do with the fan, its just the GPU at work. Its perfectly normal for a video card to make a very high pitched whine under stress. My 9800 Pro, X850XT, and 3870 make the high pitched whine under stress.

Edit: and btw, my 9800 pro was fanless.

It's a whine given off by capacitors. Try putting a blob of blue tack on top of the offending part, it sometimes helps.

is your case noisy? Try opening the side of your computer and run a GPU stress test and you should hear it. If not, I guess your particular card just isn't very whiney! :p
