socket question

I built myself a computer last year using an EVGA 680i mobo, NF-68 I believe but I can't recall right now. It is socket type 775 and currently has a E6600 in it.

Was wondering if The newer 45nm cpus would work in it or not. I remember seeing some people sayig the bought mobos back then that were garenteed to take on next years 45nm line.

as long as the CPU is the same socket type, then yes.
But the board might require a Bios update...even update to a beta bios if the chip is fairly new.

the 680i chipset can only run 45nm dual-core wolfsdale cpus - and you need to update to the latest bios. for quads, it can only run the 65nm Kentsfields. It cannot run the 45nm Yorkfield quads.

The EVGA 680i SLI, 680i LT SLI, and 650i Ultra motherboards will support 45nm Wolfsdale (dual core) CPU's with an upcoming BIOS update. 45nm Yorkfield (quad core) CPU's will be supported on nForce 700-series SLI motherboards.

quad is a waste of money right now neways, was looking more into a good priced dual core similiar to the E6600 when it was the hottest cpu a year ago.

Then again I'm also thinking to update my cpu is pure ego and just outright stupid. Maybe I should just rebuild usuing pci e 2.0?

Just wondering, are those 9 series cards much better than the 8800 GTX?

NO! Unless you are upgrading from a Nvidia 5/6 series, or ATi 9 series. I mean they are better by a mere percentage (3%~) so unless your card is pretty old then go for it. If you have a good 7 sereis Nvidia or X18~9 ATi then stick with it until the new Nvidia chips come out. (july).

Quads are a definite waste UNLESS you multi task heavily and i mean heavily. The E8400 is such a brilliant CPU get that, it is cheap. Or just overclock the hell out of yer E66. C2D are good OC'ers and are meant to be OC'ed according to Alex98UK.

Tbqh, the 9series (98s) suck if you are upgrading form an 88. Hell if i had a 58, or a 66 or even a 76GT i would not mind getting a 98GTX seeing as its cheap and performs slightly better than the 88s.

Note: the E8400, is a 45nm Chip running at 3.0GHZ, i am saying that this CPU is insane from reviews, and feedback that i have seen, i will most definitely be upgrading to this in the near future.

Well I know most of what you have stated, was just curious about the whole video card thing now.

I got an 8800 GTX evga and half a year later pciE comes out with 2.0 and its suppose to be a "woah" vs the old. And then with the release of second gen DX10 cards, I was not sure what was improved upon.

From my understanding last year, it was suggested every next gen series card vs last years should out perform the older variant in SLI mode but I'm guessing not, even with the benefit of having pcie 2.0 at its disposal.

As far as overclocking goes, I don't bother because its fast enough @ stock clock. I already brought it up to 3.4ghz I believe if I remember correctly.

Well thats good mate, the E66 is lovely, if you really are looking forward to getting a 45nm chip, theres the E82,E83,E84, and E85 series which are all good overclockers/performers.

Thats quite good that u got a 88GTX, what i would definitely recommend is to stay with it. Um the next gen cards from what i have heard/read will be released on July. The 98s are NOT next gen they are merely upgraded 88s, with the G92 architechture like the 88GT/GTS 512. Like what has been saind here on TGN the 98GX2 is basically 2 88GTs slapped together you are better off with a ATi HD3870 X2.
