Power supply or Hard drive issue?

Ok, so I was playing COD4. I went to load up a multiplayer map and my Threatfire protection software popped up, I clicked he accept button but the program wouldn't respond. I then it ctrl+alt+delete to force terminate the program but that wouldn't response, so I finally forced a shut down of the computer.

When I went to turn the computer back on, the fans, lights, etc kicked on for about 3 seconds and then everything went quiet. I heard 1 beep (which is the sound I always hear when I boot up) and that was it.

I thought at first it was the power supply, but then reconsidered because if it was the power supply the computer wouldn't turn on at all. So I assumed I did some damage to the hard drive. I then proceeded to turn the computer back on while trying to reach the "safe-mode" screen but there was no response. This in turn had me going back to a power supply issue.

BTW, the only time I can get any kind of response when it comes to power to the computer is when I unplug the PS cable and plug it back it. So in other words, I do not get any kind of response when I have the PS cable plugged in and try to hit the start up button.

I was planning on using my other computers PS to "test" the messed up one, but that wont be till tomorrow night. So if you guys can suggest anything until then, that would be great.

Put a meter on the PSU and find out... they are rather cheap if you don't have one.

As for threatfire...well its rather useless and prob picked up a false positive when the power controls kicked in. Once your up and going remove that and load avast..its much better.

But yeah, get a meter...no excuse for not having one as they are again, really cheap.

I'm really hoping its just the power supply. And I think I'll go with your idea about Avast, this isn't the first time I've had an issue with Threatfire.

I would first try re-seating all your cards and memory. also check all the connectors. after that try booting with only 1 stick of ram at a time to see if its the memory.

I'm really hoping its just the power supply. And I think I'll go with your idea about Avast, this isn't the first time I've had an issue with Threatfire.

Umm I mean like a Fluke meter... you it around the house all the time for whatever...

Ok, well I took the power supply from my old computer and connected it to the new one, and the same thing happened.

Everything points to a power supply problem, yet I'm just not 100% sure. I checked to make sure everything was tight in the case and no wires were loose, I changed around memory sticks, etc. yet I get the same problem.

I want to be absolutely sure before I buy another power supply that its a power supply issue. Any more help?

well if you tested the power supply and you still have the same problem then its obviously not the power supply.


Are you getting any video at all? If your not even seeing the POST screen or anything like that then it is most likely your motherboard / video. Try taking ALL the ram out and try booting it, if it beeps a few times then thats a good sign because the motherboard is still responsive and posting properly. Also check the num/scroll/caps lights and make sure they all blink when you power on the computer.

If the computer crashes JUST as you get to the part when you load into the OS then it is most likely your hard drive. I am leaning towards the bad hard drive because if you suddenly shut down the computer, if there is any data being written to the hard drive at the time it can become corrupted and prevent the hard drive from reading data properly.

Yeah with a PSU swap with a working one its not the PSU's problem. Reseat everything..but only try a startup using a few minor things like one chip of ram and vid card and see if it posts...including the HDD don't leave it in there either cause all you want to do is see if it posts and gets to bios.

Ok, I think I found the problem. The mobo.

I did what everyone here said, I tried to start it up with just 1 stick, then the other, then without a hard drive and again the same results, nothing at all shows on he screen and the only thing that shows on the mobo is one yellowish orange light that comes on when the fans come on and then goes off when he fans go off. So everything is leading me to the mobo.

Anyone agree? Or any other suggestions?

Forgot to mention, I took off the stock heatsink and checked to make sure the CPU was still in place. Everything checked out except the thermal paste looked to be pretty well dried up (which could also account for the high temps I was getting). So I'm going to purchase a Zalman heatsink and artic thermal paste and reapply the past and see if it will work, if not I guess its a mobo issue issue and will need to get a new one.
