Searching For a New Hard Drive

Well I'm in need of a new hard drive and I've got it narrowed down between two.

    Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
We’re sorry, but this page does not existing. Please visit our home page for more information.

    or

    Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

I like the Seagate because it has 32MB cache and people are saying the thing performs almost up to par with a Raptor and is pretty quiet. But then I saw some benchmarks that showed the WD drive being faster than the Seagate 7200.11 series. Thoughts or suggestions?

I currently have a Barracuda 7200.11 320GB (ST3320620AS), and highly recommend them. Theyre uber quiet (no loud clicking/vibrations under heavy load) and I have never had a hangup while gaming or when using other system imploding app's.

As for which is better, its personal preference (ie. nVidia vs ATi). Some say they have had nothing but problems with one brand, while the other is like gold. I will say however I have an oldschool Seagate and a WD (oldschool as in 2-5GB) and both are still kicking along.

Both are good makes, but i'd go for the Seagate Barracuda because of the larger cache size.

      However, big note:

Apparently Seagate put a SATA1 (1.5gbps) jumper on the hard disk by default to ensure compatibility. The pic below shows where the jumper might be and instructions labelling what each jumper does are shown on top of the drive:

I can just recommend Western Digital HDs. Never had a single problem with all I got so far; so they're very stable, very quiet and nicely fast.

I mean, in the end the important thing is the performance itself, not the numbers that are higher.

I am going to have to go with the Seagate. I have had a lot of Seagates and WD's in my life and career. WDs are great drives and I have little negatives to say about them, but even if the performance is only 3% better then the Seagate, I would still opt for the Seagate. These newer SATA Seagates are insanely quiet. And with the cache being the size it is, it only helps the buffering more.

TBH though, you will be happy with either. You are going to see a lot of people lean to the Seagates for a good reason.

Thanks for the replies you guys. I think I'm going to go ahead and go with the Seagate. I'll let you know how I like it once I get it all set up. :)
