So, I posted here a few weeks back to gather ideas for my new computer. I'm average when it comes to computer-building ability, so I wanted the best possible build for my price range.

So, does this look good to you guys? See any places that I could improve on or possibly lower costs? Also, which version of Vista should I go with, I'll be focusing mostly on basic/moderate video editing and heavy gaming.

I would raise a few points. Firstly, that PSU is nice, but not modular. Thus, you have a load of spare wires lying around in the case. Buy a modular one and just plug in the cables you need. Just bought one of these below:

Secondly, those CPU coolers are okay... but okay at best. Irecommend the Tuniq Tower. Bigger, better and cheaper. Pretty much all overclockers and PC fans use these.

Lastly, that case may look nice on your screen, but quite often things like that are extremely tacky when you recieve them. They say steel, but a lot of it will be plastic. I really recommend stumping up some more cash for a case. I assume you want a window, so is something that is similar price:

The case however, i would recommend spending a bit more than $100 on it. My mate did the exact same thing, ordered a sweet as case, got it, and it just didn't look good in real life.

Alright, and what about Vista? What version would you recommend?

Also, I picked out the memory by myself - I think it looks pretty good, would you agree? And the modular power supply is about $30 more than the one I picked out, so you think it's worth the extra money? Thanks again for the help.

Vista Home Premium 64bit

Modular is worth extra money, especially if you have a window case. It means you dont have extra cables lying around and making it look messy.

Everything looks perfect, except i would listen to Alex, he gives pretty good advice, and yeah a Mod Psu, is way better will keep ur case neat and nice :).

And i would take his advice on the case, don't by one that has no brand name, usually they break or have bad cooling.

I'm not a fan of the 9800 series. All they are are OCed 8800GTS 512 with a fancy name and $100 extra. I'd recommend a 8800GTS 512 which can easily be found for ~$200. I think $300 on graphics is better (dare I say it) on 9600GT SLI. This is especially true on games that scale well and at high resolutions.

A minor issue (IMO) is the mobo/CPU choice seems a bit lopsided. You picked a budget motherboard with a upper midrange CPU. I'd either get a beefier Mobo (Like an Abit IP35 Pro) or a cheaper CPU (Like the soon to be released E7200). I'm not sayin it won't work, it just seems a bit off imo. But this is a tiny tiny problem.

And blocking critical airflow. Too many people ignore that cooling can make or break a build.

I have the GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3R motherboard, and had to disable some stuff in bios to get the OS to install with the E8400 cpu.
I think they are working on a new bios, but you may want to reconsider your choice to be safe, incase it has the same issue.
