If microsoft wanted to they could but they would much rather sell copies of vista with dx10 as one of the main features

Every game that has a Games for Windows and a Vista Logo on it should work for every edition of Windows Vista 32bit and 64bit. Which are standards that Microsoft has set so the developers can follow to make sure their game will work on Windows Vista. If they start slipping on keeping to the standards then the game will have problems and might loose it's certification.

Most older games like BF2 work on Vista if not the developers will have to back and create a patch for their game to meet the new standards so it can be run on current Vista systems. As when Vista released Windows XP automatically became legacy software like Adobe CS2 when CS3 product line was released. But most of the time the updating of these games would strictly be done in a developers free time for games like manhunt or midnight club 2.

              EDIT
As sometimes if your a software development company you have to stop supporting your older software eventually so you can spend time developing your current software and preparing for the next version as the product life cycle has to end eventually.

Yep you should be ok with 32 bit for some time but Vista will be the last Operating System that offers 32bit support if everything goes according to plans. As most users probably already have 64bit processors but have their OS running the 32bit versions.

idk the difference, does one utilize more ram than the other and is presumably faster?

Vista is very stable with games dated back to 1998, for me anyway. Makesure you have the latest drivers for all your software/hardware.

Vista unlike many other OS takes all your ram and puts it into a pot and then when you want to use a program it dips into this pot so you can play open your appliation faster. So if you went into task manager it may appear to be using say 1GB of RAM wheras it wont really be using this amount at all, its just caching it. Hope the above is simple enough to understand.

                        Re: Xp + Dx10

Yes, 64bit uses more RAM and is faster. Which when DirectX 10 goes into full effect Vista 64bit Owners will reap the benefits 10 fold if they have enough ram, storage, and processing power then what it is now but this will only happen when developers catch up with the current hardware .
So if you hear of any new games coming out that aren't Vista Certified, don't work with correctly with 64bit Vista with 4GBs of RAM and more that is a good indication that the developers are working in the past.

But for Microsoft to takes the time and attempt to put DX10 into XP would more then likely do the bulk of Windows XP 32bit users more harm then good in the end. Why you ask, well I can take a wild guess and probably accurate guess that in a few years 4GBs of RAM will probably be the minimum required amount of RAM to run games on all low. When you are running a game in DX10 vs DX9 the system resource usage is somewhat doubled.

You can take Crysis for example, Windows XP runs on around 300MB-500MB or even less if your not doing anything. When you start to play Crysis it uses around 1,000MB to 2000MBs of RAM depending on your graphics settings and if you have customized them my FPS on Crysis Ranges from 20 to 70FPS in intense battles which is weird but true with everything maxed out in DX10 Mode. If I turn it to DX9 only the framerates go off the charts and the resource usage normally maxes out around 1GB for Crysis.

If you have vista you are normally running at around 1GB to 2GBs doing regular things, once you start up Crysis, FFOW, BF2, ArmA, Grand Theft Auto SA, etc. you might come to find you don't have any physical memory left and your games performance will suffer. If your running the editor then you will get a little warning icon in the bottom of the editor letting you know of the problem. Plus Crysis is one of the few developers that has developed a game that takes full advantage of Windows Vista 64bit with 4GBs of RAM and Multiple Processors/Cores.

I know some don't want to move to Vista because of the large amount of resources it uses, but it also does more and offers users more information, customization and security of their systems if they take the time to learn how to use it. But this is normal with every upgrade that comes around with technology. Plus you can do a larger amount of multitasking then you would ever be able to do in Windows XP. It's like the guy that just bought a Playstation 3 without a 1080P HDTV with HDMI cables. Your always going to missing out what is currently available for your enjoyment. Yeah the games are going to be fun but you will not get the experience the developers spent all their time with the graphics to give to you.
