I'm not sure about moving the program files folder. Not saying it wouldn't work, I haven't tried it.

However, I've seen others do it without problems and some people in this thread said they did it also, so apparently its safe.

I don't know if you can actually move the Program Files folder, bu I do know you can make another one and install your stuff in it.

Yah, that's what I mean... I wanted like 100% positivity. Well, I guess I'll just create a new one one the 2nd partition and install everything there.

Instead of creating a new topic, I thought I'd ask here. Have any one ever used Password Manager on Firefox? Wanted to ask if that is safe or like completely unsafe to use.

About Firefox, I use it and it works well. I don't know about the security of it, I'm the only one that uses my computer. But I'm sure its secure enough to protect against everyone except pro hackers.

Sorry to revive an old topic, but wanted to ask something about the partition. How much space will you need to partition just Windows Vista? Don't want to partition too much and have it not be used...

Vista takes between 6GB and 8GB depending upon what version of Vista you have.


Turn off system restore and allow another gig for driver installs... I suggest 20gigs to fool around with as Vista will need up to 16gigs for the install process..but after the dust settles it will take up to 6-8 again depending on the version you use.

Give Windows Vista 80GBs.
-Why so much you ask.
Yes the initial install takes up 16GB to 20GBs but over time the Windows Updates, required files that need to be placed on the system drive will start to fill up the space. The largest folder will probably become C:\Program Data which Installers like Install Shield, etc. put required files that if moved will cause the primary program to stop working.

You can however disable hibernation by opening the command prompt as administrator and typing in "powercfg –h off" which will save you a large amount of space. If you do want to turn hibernation back on which many users don't use just run "powercfg –h on" to reenable it.

Keep system restore activated and don't turn it off unless your trying to do system maintenance, trying to get rid of a virus, etc. Having it enabled helps you get back up and running in case something unexpected happens or Windows is unable to boot, you can run System Repair and it will load your system from the last restore point or even further back so you don't have to reformat and start from scratch again if you do not have backups.

So every update for Windows would install in C: and there's no changing that like to F: or something?

By hibernation you mean the option that says "Hibernate" in the category with log off, shut down, switch user, etc. and why should I disable that, does it take up space each time I do it?

There is no way even 5years worth of updates will fill up a gig of space let alone several. You don't believe that just look at the size of SP1 and you will see all those updates plus other stuff within that single pack of hardly any size in over a years worth of updates etc.

30-40 is plenty and turning off System restore is a good idea since its really not needed as long as you don't load a crap load of junk on there you never want to lose but even then a restore often screws up a system from a missing program it thinks is still there. In my Professional Opinion system restore is a waste and useless to cause nothing but headaches. Do a system image with Acronis or Ghost and don't worry about it ever again.

The Bulk of the used up space is from programs that have to fill up your system drive by installing required files, etc. to the ProgramData and User folders unfortunately, all the other folders are no more then a few gigs.

Maybe one day when I install a new program all the files being installed will be installed where I told them to be , but that's very unlikely.

Yep that's the correct setting for hibernate, the amount of space it takes up is the exact size of your pagefile/system ram plus a few hundred megabytes.

There is sleep/standby (stores information in RAM and goes into low power mode) mode and then there is hibernation mode (stores information on the hard drive and turns off the power). Only disable hibernation if you do not use it.
