Best performance : price GFX card

    Hi,

After seeing my sweet pc, a friend wants to make the switch from consoles to computers for gaming. i've got all the other parts lined up but would like your recommendation for a gfx card. his budget is $120 USD.. here is his future specs you can fill in the gfx card and power supply (its ATX)

he told me word for word he will mostly be playing CSS, HL2, older games like GTA: SA, but would like to play some newer games like MOH: airborne, maybe crysis, flight simulator X (<-- this is an important one), idk stuff like that

e2180 2ghz (he doesnt trust anyone to OC it)
    2gb ddr2 667
    i think maybe a 250gbish hard drive
    and a motherboard w/ pci x16

120 for a GFX seems a bit low. I think the best to last a while would be the 9600GT ($150). I don't know many cards in between the HD 3650 ($70) and >$150 cards, but the 3650 performs as well as an 8600 card I think.

$120 isn't enough to get a good or even decent" graphics card. Tell him to save at least $30 or cut money out from somewhere else (like eating out and junk food for a month)

Either get a 8800GT or a 9600GT. You can get an 8800GT for around $160 after rebates. I'm sure you can get a 9600GT somewhat less than that (maybe $130?).

The HD 3650 can actually play Crysis at high on 1680*1050 at ~20 FPS. http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews.p..._pcs_edition/7

Put the settings down a notch to medium and that'd be pretty good for a $70 card.

I don't think so. It says the 8600GT gets 20FPS average at all high. When I had an 8600GT I had 10 FPS on high, 5 FPS on very high, and 30 FPS on medium. Plus, this was at 1280x1024

I'd like to know what the best gfx card is to run flight simulator X. Single cards only, non sli.

price really isnt a factor, as I would be specing out this build for someone and they mainly play fsx.

I have the 8800GT and can about 20 FPS on FSX sliders all up except autogen. And about 10 in airports.

You need a quad core and SLI to run full in FSX.

Get an 8800GTS (G92) then or wait for newer cards to come out.

Best you can get TBH, since FSX is highly GPU intensive, but bear in mind that RAM and CPU are also major factors in FSX, unlike many games where it becomes less important once you reach 2GP and a decent C2D.
