OC'd Q6600

Hey,

Ok so over the last couple of days i have been trying to get my Q6600 stable at 3.6GHz.. i have a fairly cheap aftermarket heatsink.. but none the less yesterday i managed to get my cpu to 3.6GHz and while running Prime (small FFT's test) and the hottest i got to was about 63c..

Later that day i did another test and got to 72c and lockup within no more than a minute.

Volts are set to automatic..

i then dropped the clock back to 3GHz and tested with similar results as to what i had at 3.6GHz earlier that day.. (62c top)

today i have tested it again and these are the results.



so i tried it once again with 3.6GHz.. BSOD in less than a minute..

does anyone have any ideas as to why such a dramatic temp increase?

Hotter temperature in the room.

Or, could hit a Vdroop meaning that sometimes it's colder because it's running less Volts than it says, and when it's not hitting a Vdroop, its hotter.

no same room temp

and maybe.. i think ill just leave it at 3GHz and be happy with that.. the thing is once u have reached 3.6GHz u don't want to go back

I'm thinking when you get to the high end of overclocking you probably don't want to have any settings on 'auto'. perhaps try manually setting your ram timings, voltage, and cpu voltage. be sure to know what the max safe voltages are.

Oh definitely. For going past 3.4ghz you want full voltage control over northbridge, southbridge, memory, CPU, everything.

Remember to have sufficient VRM cooling, increase the memories CAS latencies and lock both PCI and PCI_E frequencies.

But, 3.5ghz+ can be hard to achieve as past 3.4ghz, you really have to spank up the voltages.

I would think 4 processors at 3.0 Ghz each would be enough.

Your right. It is easy to pull 3.3ghz, and above that, you won't notice too much difference.

im not sure of the brand its just some cheapy.. cost around $60 aus.. but its pretty decent...

looks very similar to this.. only without the fan controller.

yeah.. well its not a brand name one..it's some dodgy knock off version... but there wouldnt be much if any performance difference its all the same stuff :)

Incorrect, otherwise everyone would buy cheapo knock off's. The type of metals they use, the quality of cut in the fins, the liquid inside the heatpipes is different, and makes a difference.

hmm i have a mate who has a brand name version he paid about $80+ for and his cpu runs around the same temps as mine.. identically pc except for the gpu and ram

so i should have stated this particular heatsink.. i didn't mean to generalize.

I agree with signa: You just hit a lucky streak with that 3.6GHz with auto voltages. Better not to use auto voltages at all if you are overclocking. It gives stability in return.

This is why you should research before overclocking.Setting vcore on auto and raising the fsb and expecting 3.6 is not reasonable,especially with a crap cooling system.

My suggestion,be happy with a 3ghz overclock before you damage your hardware.
