$1,500 - Help?

Well,
my system is quite outdated now. I run an AMD 3500+ with a Geforce 7800 GTX, 2gb memory and XP. I'm looking to build a completely new computer, including a new case and monitor.

My budget is around $1,500 USD, and I would like to purchase off of newegg. I'm also looking to still have a Geforce card and and Intel processor, and of course a good monitor . However, I don't know whether I should keep XP or go to Vista, as DX10 has been cracked for XP.

So, could you guys help me out? I'm open to all suggestions, and I would like this computer to last me a few years, so I'm willing to go slightly over budget.

It sounds cool, but its completely impractical and a waste IMO.

yep yep the ScintoMaster and jake are right!

heres what you could get for that price though:

E8400 procs Intel new 45nm @ 3.0ghz easily OC'able.

2 or gbs Ram (XP) 4gbs Ram (vista) btw i would stay with Xp for a while.

8800GT or 8800GTS 512MB

500GB west digi or any other good brand, (oh and try to salvage ur old HDD if compatible)

Abit IP35, Asus P5K, Gigabyte P35 (P35 chipsets are good).

PSU a 620 Modular Corsair, 600W OCZ, Cooler Master andy major brand is good DO NOT SKIMP ON PSUs VERY IMP NO1 RULE!!!11!!1on1!!!one!!!

Case Antec900, P182, CM690, CM stacker.

Any good OEM optical drive is good, and for screen hmm LCD 19" mebeh

I've had a few friends recommend the 9' series though, but you guys are saying stick to the 8800?

yeah but u can also buy a PC with 2 88s and last three years, i say buy (if u want next gen) buy the procs, ram, others first and leave the gfx till when its released the ACTUAL next gens i think they are called the G200s or 99s idk :S.

9800gtx is worth getting... as long as you don't have a 8 series card.

It's a good price and good performance, just people don't like it as they can't justify an upgrade from the original Nvidia DX10 cards.

well Alex ur right, if u have an 88, it ain't worth an upgrade to a 98, BUT however in ur case K0dak yeah Alex is completely right an upgrade from a 78 to a 98 is quite a good jump imo so go for it, what _S3rH3nD_ suggested from cyberpower perfect as a matter of fact, if i was upgrading from a p4 and a 6 or 7 series i would definitely go with _S3rH3nD_ suggestion.

:|: Um. I disagree with this. (sorry!) I think the 9800 series are terrible products. Look at my rant here. Basically, the 9800 series is nothing more than an overclocked 8800GTS. Why pay $100 more for just for an overclocked version of a 8800GTS with a fancy name? I say 8800GTS until the 9900 series comes out. 9900 is actually a new chip. As for performance, the price/performance ratio is actually quite bad with the 9800GTX. The rest of the article also shows how the 9800GTX isn't really worth it.

It's not that the GeForce 9800 GTX is a bad card, because it's not. The performance it delivers is reasonable for its price. The problem is that Nvidia offers a card that is very nearly the same thing, is an inch and a half shorter, is less expensive, and performs almost just as well: the GeForce 8800 GTS 512.

As for an actual config for $1500, I'd do somethin like this:

Adds up to around ~$1200. Honestly, I woudn't spend more than this on a computer right now. Doen't include keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers, but you can get that yourself. Case, DVD Burner, GPU Brand are completely up to you. Hope this helps. :)

The only good 9 card is the 9600 imo. But that's mid-range, go for the 8800GTX/GTS. And SLI is a waste in general.

Yep. With SLI you'll get like a 30-40% boost in performance for paying 100% more.

Not worth it unless you are filthy, stinking rich.

ok, TheSpark suggested quite a good rig, and yes SLI is a waste unless its quite cheap it SlI though, i was never a fan of the 98s after i saw its measure ups with the rest of the 88s a few fps is NOT worth getting if u have an 88, but ne ways i agree completely on getting a GTS512, BFG is a label brand if want to go cheaper u can go for an OEM.

And sure we all know its (98gtx) nothing more than a OC'ed version of the 88GT/S but its a good upgrade if u find the Ultras and GTXs too expensive, but u would not recommend the card as an upgrade.
