Might upgrade video card

I'm thinking about upgrading my 8600GT. I have less than $200, so an 8800GT is out of the question.

I'm considering a 9600GT, 8800GS, or 3850. Where I'm buying from, they're all roughly the same price.

I only have a 300W PSU so that'll probably have to be upgraded, too.

So which of those 3 should I get? And what would the minimum power supply be for the card you suggest?

I'm not getting any more money so I can't wait a bit to get an 8800GT. The only way I'd get an 8800GT is if there's another deal where it's like $180. Even then that's pushing it because I don't know much money I'll have yet. Right now, the cheapest option is a 9600GT for $159 after rebate

Why not just sell the 8600GT on eBay or Craigslist?

Yeah that's the plan. My dad can sell it at work for a ridiculous price, so I might be able to get like $150 for it. I have $50 in cash right now. A PSU I need would be like $30 - $50

9600 GT is an excellent card at the current price. Just remember it is a PCI Express 2.0 card. Sucks a tad more power from the board.

Odd that you're in the same predicament I was in another thread. I bought a PC, threw out the 8500 and replaced it with a 9600 GT OC. Great card, but I hit issues in game causing my PC to die. Turns out I had a 300W PSU also. I've just replaced that with a 500, and it's running like a dream.

But yes, 9600, for the cash, comes highly recommended.

No way, don't be impatient to get a card asap. Its not life threatening right? Why not just wait a few weeks. 8800gt prices may even still drop more! Lots of deals around $180 pop up all the time. Or you might get some more moola.

Not to say the 9600 isn't bad, but it isn't really the performance card of the 9' series even and you might as well wait a week or two, right?

edit: of course, you also need to shell out some money for a better PSU, easily as much as $100 if you want one that won't destroy your computer and will last.

hmm i see what you're saying, jake. I'll have to see. I know the 88GT > 96GT, 88GS and 3850 but I just want something good, at a low price. That $159 96GT is looking really good. and no, I really won't be getting any more money lol. I don't work, and the $50 is from christmas. there's no other holidays coming up where I'll be getting money

IMO, the 9600GT is on a different performance level than the 8800GS and 3850. The recent pricing doesn't really reflect this however... :hmm: It'll be straightened out soon. But yeah, if they all cost about the same definitely get the 9600GT.

I voted for 3850, but then I realised it was 3850 and not 3870. So my vote goes to the 9600.
