    Graphics card driver help

I build this computer in November 2007, and I downloaded what I thought were the latest drivers. Now, I'm having trouble playing Portal and HL2E2 and think it might be driver related since I can't figure out any other solution.

I went to the ATI website and it said there was a Feb 2008 update to 8.2 drivers.

This is were I'm confused. I looked at the drivers I have now, and they say 8.4....., so how could the 8.2 be an update?

Any help for the driver issue and the game(s) issue would be great, thanks.

      Oops, that would help.

Well I posted in the HL forums but Oli was the only one to respond.

I get extreme lag when I load the game. Clicking on menu's takes several seconds to responed.

That would be a cute trick, the Cat 8.4 won't be out till some time in April. What the OP is looking at is the driver version number (internal build number), and not the Cat version number,

in fact the ATI drivers have been 8.4xx since the Cat 7.8

That is the latest, Cat 8.2. The 8.3 will be out in the next couple of weeks. And just to help explain what I said previously about driver version and Cat version,

              notice the first two lines.

Well just checked the steam forums and it seems my problem is happening to alot of people. They are pinning the problem to the update for TF2.

So for you guys who are regulars on TF2, Portal, and HLE2. Check to see if your games are running without lag.

This is what I pulled from steam for my system information on the graphics card:

                Catalyst version 07.11
                2D Driver Version 6.14.10.6734
                Catalyst® Control Center Version 2007.1101.2317.39832

Well, it looks like I'm alittle behind on the drivers, that could be the issue.

I'm just not sure which one to download, because I heard there are performance issues with the 8.2 drivers. Should I focus on the 8.1?

                Thanks for the help

Don't have any of those games, but I do have the same card as you. Haven't tried the 8.2's as I haven't had any problems with the 8.1's so far.

Went ahead and updated my drivers to 8.2, but I still get extreme lag in HLE2, and Portal.

I'm going to assume this is a steam issue, and I hope they fix it soon.

                    Thanks for the help guys.

Let us know how it works out. I'd like to see if it was a software issue with steam or something larger. The Source engine can be nitpicky at times.
