Does anyone use Ubuntu?

Ubuntu is pretty cool. If you bought a laptop JUST for writing papers, and surfing the internet. It would be perfect. And its so much faster because its not loaded with stuff like windows and plus you don't have to worry about stupid anti virus.

you might be able to disable some stuff with a custom startup line.

Windows XP for me. I've had experience with Linux/Redhat but I didn't see any real performance or stability gain so i said screw it. My XP doesn't crash... I know it's hard to believe.

At work we are starting to move certain applications from Windows to Linux because of stability issues.
But that is servers with a heavy workload.

For my own PC I wouldn't bother with Linux. XP is stable enough for everyday use, and I need it for games anyway.
If I feel an irresistible urge to nerd with Linux, I will just boot it from a live CD.

Although they both deny it, in the end Windows is a desktop OS and Linux is a server OS.

Hey guys im just about to download ubuntu...What do i have to do in order to do a dual boot...i have xp btw

You either have to repartition your hard drive (Hard) or install a new one (Easy). Then select the new drive/ partition and install ubuntu on that. Set that drive as bootable and you will then be presented with a screen like this every time you boot, from which you select your OS of choice. :) [media]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Grub-knoppix.jpg[/media]

Just liveboot. For a casual person, Windows is a much, much better choice.

Whilst i do like Linux, people say it's better because it's faster and much more stable. To be honest, Vista boots just as quickly (provided your not the kind of person who downloads tons of software then never edits startup in msconfig and never defrags), plus, i've never crashed in Vista.

I see there is a place in the market for Linux, it's just not on standard desktops such as mine.

do a install to a flash drive and save your changes on that.

i put the live cd on a flash drive and boot from that. way faster than live CD.
