Came back from vacation and now PC won't turn on.

I have a desktop computer that has worked perfectly for a year. I went on vacation for one week and nobody has touched it while I was gone. I come back and what happens is pretty weird - it happens in steps:

* I press the power button
* The case lights, hard disk light, and power lights all turn on
* The case lights and HDD lights turn off (in less than a second0
* The power light remains on but nothing happens - the hard drives don't spin and the fans are still


What could have happened? How do I fix this?

Does the screen light change to green as if there is an input?

go through the usual troubleshooting sequence:

power off, turn off power supply, re-seat all cards, and memory, check all power connectors, power back on and try to boot.

if that dont work, try booting with only 1 stick of memory at a time to see if one has failed.

if still no boot, then power down, reset cmos jumper, and remove mobo battery for a min, put everything back then boot.

if still no boot, remove all extra cards, drives, etc. until your trying to boot with only whats required to boot: 1 stick memory, hdd, video card.

signa, I did as you described but the computer still didn't start up.

the enigma, nope. it doesn't do anything besides giving current to the Power LED after the lights shut off

maker sure the mobo is grounded properly.

hm it could be a power supply or motherboard issue. do you have another power supply you can put in it to test?

You dont want the mother board touching the case.

Ok I made sure that the motherboard wasnt touching the case and its not.

No I dont have a spare psu

one more thing

when I came back i noticed my mp3 player was connected to the usb port and it said 'charging' even though the computer was off. i had forgotten it in the rush to catch my flight. could this have busted the power supply or something
