The 9600 is about 200ish and the 8800GT is about 220-240 these days

The 9600gt looks like a very good mid range card. Outperforms the 3870 in mosts tests, and sometimes matches the 8800gt.

I would expect to see this card sell well as long as poor supply doesn't bump up the price.

As can be seen clearly, STALKER and Age of Empires III are the exceptions: the only games for which the GeForce 9600 GT managed to edge the HD 3870. In all the other cases, the HD 3870 was fairly clearly ahead of its rival, with spreads of 13 to 15% with Call of Duty 4 and World In Conflict, and smaller ones with Unreal Tournament 3 and Supreme Commander.

The situation was reversed once the filters were enabled, even though the spreads weren't as wide. In four games, the HD 3870 kept the advantage or was only slightly behind the 9600 GT. Two games gave the card an especially strong advantage in filter mode, with a difference of more than 20%: Oblivion and Supreme Commander.

Remember, drivers to optimise the 9600gt haven't been released yet. But, i don't know how big an impact they will have.

Well is it worth me waiting for hd3870 prices to drop because i have 2x16 pci-e lanes for crossfire an have hd3870..i would like to sell my hd3870 and go back to nvidia but i didnt keep the box.....

I do not think you could justify the increase in performance compared to price. The 3870 will not drop enough to ever be a viable Crossfire option unless you buy 2 right from the start.

The only reason I would buy a 3870 is for the x2 version by Asus with 4x DVI outputs, for the ultimate flightsimming setup. :evil:
