Nehalem is octo core, which will require a new motherboard so buying one when they are 1st released will cost you a small fortune,

I guess it depends on how many models they want to release of it, if it sticks to maybe 2 or 3 they would be costly, unlike the E6300 which was at the lower end od C2D's when it was released.

Nehalem might be for the P45 boards on the horizon which should be better than the X48's but even then the better the hardware that gets released the deeper your pocket will have to be, I think i may skip Nehalem's release untill 2009 sometime, 8 cores seems to be a bit overkill.

Exactly. The use of Dual-Cores has been basically void until recently. Only a few games have been starting to utilise 2 cores. Crysis, Bioshock and even WoW are some examples. What I mean by that is the extra cores have been giving a significant improvement to warrant upgrading to an extra core. Quad-Core being utilised fully is a longshot, let alone Octo-Core.

The only use of more than 2 cores right now would be for multi-tasking. It would be better to get a Dual-Core CPU with the same Cache/Freq than the Quad/Octo, if you're comparing price difference. The extra money for those cores would be better spent on new RAM/GPU/MOBO/PSU etc.

and that's at 2.66 Ghz, although that's probably with speed step and other power saving options on.

Although they have only just starting using dual core in most aplications, without producing more cores per processor companies will not start to make their programs use it, it would mean they were producing it for a smaller market.
