Need more HD space - recommendations?

I built my rig almost a year ago to date, and I'm just now approaching the 160GB limit of my HD (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136062).

I don't really know much about RAID or formatting a second HD (have Vista Home Premium 32 bit). A link to a guide would be nice.

I'd like to add another 160GB-320GB for under $100. Should I just buy the 320GB version of the HD I already have, or is there a better way?

The 320gb Samsung Spinpoint models are renowned for great prices and good quality.

As with most SATA disks, it's simply plug and play. When Vista boots, it should recognise the new disk and make it available.

However, sometimes this doesn't happen. All you have to do then is go into "device manager", found under properties when right clicking on my computer. You should see the disk, and it might have a exclamation mark next to it. To use it, simply format it into a suitable file system (NTFS), and it should be good to go.

just delete all of the pr0n of your HD and you should have plenty of space without having to buy a new HD.

I'm thinking about getting ones for making backups.

Externals are great i put all my music, videos, pics on there and my pc runs great

I have got during my computer using days all the major manufacturer's drives. Roughly from my experiences:

Maxtor - Fine at first but all my maxtors have sooner or later started be noisier and noisier. And you can definately hear their drive from the get-go.

Seagate - Ok drives. No so good as Samsung or Western Digital but better than Maxtors (which it bought). With aging their noise characteristics tend to worse and worse.

Samsung - Very good drives. No noise and no problems.

Western Digital - Very good drives. No noise either or problems.

What comes to external drive you have to weigh between the portability and it being on the table all the time if you just use it as a regular HD.

I would buy an internal drive in your case.

I've had a maxtor drive for over a year and a half. I can't even hear it either.

My 80gb Maxtor drives did the same thing. They were fine but after a few months they got loud. The SATA plug broke so i RMA'd them and got back 2x160gb Western Digital Caviars and they are dreamy.

i just replaced mines got a 500gb setpoint and its great for the price just under £60 thats $118 wee bit over what your looking for but i would say its worth it.

All 3 of my Seagate drives have been vibrating periodically for the last year. Durable but very annoying. Absolutely no problem so far with Samsung drives, or WD.

Well, I think I'll get one of the Samsungs then since everybody seems to have good reviews. (Not sure whether I need another 500GB though )
