This card reports as a single unified piece of hardware in Windows, which is a better solution than virtually separating the two “twins”. Although it goes by the codename R680, we are dealing with two R670 chips, however, a marketing difference had to be made. Basically, all the characteristics of an ordinary HD 3870 are present, just multiplied by two. That means: 2x320 stream processors, 2x16 ROPs and so on. Just like the other HD 3xxx series models, this card has native support for DirectX 10.1, Shader Model 4.1 and OpenGL 2.0.

should be about $400-500 in the states, or a quadzillion blighty.

edit: but this does show off what ati is able to do with their new fab, what with the reduced power (HEAT) considerations. expect two 680 cores on a single PCB to draw about 200W. still needs a good heatsink/fan solution BUT in terms of efficiency, we're way up ahead of the sweaty stupidity that was the 2900xt.

if the drivers are good, they might achieve 2x the performance of a single hd3780 consistently.

now just fix the *&&^* AA/AF issue, and i'll...consider buying one when a good deal comes along.

yes it does for now,ATI is the king of gfx again untill the 9800x2.

but i imagine the price to be lower than that of a ultra,nvidia may lower there prices.

looking forward to some benchmarks of 2 3870x2 in a x38.

i also heard that the giant cooler does a great job of cooling both chips some manufactures will bump them out with 850 core,

then of course there a 3dmark kings with there liquid nitrogen cooling to look forward to :)

nice to see ATI take the lead for now even if it is short lived with the 9800x2 coming out.

but shader heavy games should be a breeze with a 3870x2 with 640strem processes to play with.

I hate to be a downer on this graphics card but Pairing up video cores isnt really the best thing to do in my opinion, because games are optimised for single core for example my processor has 4 cores on most games bf2,hl2 etc only one core is used leaving the other 3 sitting there doing very little

Some games like crysis use 2 and some of the third core but thats only the tiny minority of games so its always preferrable to have one fast core than more slower cores

Voodoo and ATI paired two cores on one board lots back in the early 2000's but when nvidia showed up with faster single core graphics cards ATI turned back to single core graphics, whereas voodoo didnt and went bankrupt

On the good side ATI has a card that is the fastest for the first time since the 8800 series was released but the 9800gx2 is due for release so im almost certain it wont last for long

I really like how it only has one 8 pin pci-e connector.

Am i the only one who wants to see a innovative design not just 2 gpus slapped together?I dont doubt this is a breakthrough but i was hoping the new 900's would be more than 2 g92's on a pcb.
