Alright I've got a question about dual channel. I have 3 256MB sticks and a 512 MB stick of ddr2 4200 ram in my computer right now. I also have an extra 256 stick laying around. Would I get better performance if i took the 512mb stick out and replaced it with the 256mb stick so it would run in dual channel?

Well, you would lose 256mb of ram, but from what I've heard, dual channel doubles the memory bandwidth, so it is faster. I've just installed dual channel ram a week or so ago, and it does seem faster. However, I also overclocked my cpu.
I say just swap it out and try and see which is better. -

More RAM is better! Unless the RAM is a matched pair - then you get the speed increase as described above.Comment
