ok so I was using rivatuner a bit to change my gpu fan speed and I came across three different settings:

standard 2D
low power 3D
performance 3D

i'm just curious what each setting corresponds to. I know what they are generally, but like what's the difference between low power 3D and performance?

also, how do I change the individual settings? i can only change performance 3D, and when I do, it changes them all to what performance 3D is at.

right now they're all at default (30%), but I want the fan to run at 70% or higher when I'm playing games

I followed this guide for the fan settings. Its pretty confusing but once you get it set up it works great.

i think its something about the newer nvidia drivers where ti doesnt really recognize the diff between those.

if u use an older driver, then u should be able to change them separately

i'm reading the guide warhawk suggested. i'm using the new 169.25 WHQL drivers, and when I start rivatuner, a popup comes up saying i'm using unsupported drivers and that I should get an updated version of rivatuner (even though there isn't one)

should I be making any changes because of this?

No, don't change. I changed the Performance 3d clocks, and they always seem to stay at those frequencies.

New nvidia drivers come --> Rivatuner complains about it. It works just fine if you have a rivatuner version that supports generally your card (like 8800GTS 640MB or 8800GT). I'm not sure what would happen if you try rivatuner on 8800GTS 512MB since in my knowledge rivatuner 2.06 does not support it yet. It's been holiday season and like all guys out there this Russian dude is having a rest. It usually took 1-2 weeks for a new rivatuner version to come after a new nvidia driver.

I think the guide was quite simple.

You just make fan speed levels --> Then make the triggering temps and that's it.

3D frequency settings are always in effect now with 8800 series. There used to be that possibility of having the "idle" 2D settings for desktop and 3D settings for games. But now Vista uses 3D directx all the time thus making the comp run on 3D settings all the time.

A very neat thing was to have OSD showing the fps on screen while playing games. For some reason I haven't been able to do so with Vista.
