New Soundcard, What One?

Hey,

Im planning on buying a new Soundcard but i dont know what one i need to buy,

Can anyone reccomend me some cards for around £30 - £60.

Which are a good make!

I think ill pick up a soundcard as well.I dont really need a new motherboard ro processor as my e6300 is quite fine as it is.

Vista 32-bit and X-Fi? Have the problems gone away?

Is there really any benefits? I have Audigy 2 and a Silvercrest USB headset for playing. Well I got two mediocre desktop speakers also. I'm not a hifi guy by any definition of the word.

What are the benefits of X-Fi? I've got 5.1 surround even on my motherboard let alone in audigy. And I hardly use it with the current setup.

Xtreme Gamer seems to sell for like €65 here and I seriously doubt an X-Fi would bring anything new to the table. If you would be so kind to state your cases: why xtreme gamer is a way to go I would be happy. Make your sales pitches.

They have the program called Creative Alchemy which allows EAX effects in games on Vista. So you'll need that.

Only for DirectSound3D games, Alchemy is not needed for OpenAL games like BF2/2142.

That's the very weird part. I got this USB headset for Christmas. I wouldn't have bought them for myself just because of them being USB. I also have the old headset which is plugged directly to the card at back.

I have disabled the integrated sound-chip from BIOS just because of Audigy. And wonder of wonders the USB works flawlessly.

It says on the box that it will work with the existing sound card. It's either the Windows is processing the audio for it or the soundcard is. My bet is that it's Windows.

I'm just too lazy to remove the sound-card to verify this. Like I said I'm no hifist so the sound is not really my priority. I just want to know if X-Fi is really worth getting. Or is only a hifist able to appreciate it?

for games not already in Alchemy it is very easy to add them.

BTW for those playing BF2 (and possibly other games) on Vista 64 and using a 5.1 speaker setup, try copying the CT_OAL.dll from the SysWOW64 into your BF2 folder. This at least for me allows full 5.1 sound without having to use CMSS3D. Reason being is that the OpenAL component in BF2 is looking to the System321 folder for CT_OAL, but the one that is there is the 64 bit version.

Only way that the USB headset is working through the sound card is if it is connected to the card using a USB-3.5mm adapter. Anything else and the headset is using its own driver.
