    CPU overclocking

    HI guys???

I've been thinking. I was wondering if it would be ok to overclock my cpu.

My cpu is core2 duo processor e4500 LGA775 Pkg, 1.8 each.

So, i have some questions. ^^

    1. How much should i overclock it to without any tools?(Fan upgrades etc)

    2. Mine has 200 mhz times 9... How should i overclock it?
Up the mhz part or the multiplier?

    3. And which one is better to edit my things? In the BIOS or using somekind
    of a program?

    4.This ain't a American forum, right?

First question is is this an off-the-shelf computer (Dell, HP, etc), or did you build it yourself?

If it is an OTS, forget it, isn't going to happen.

I can change the settings but im just afraid of the risks that might happen.

If you don't know what your doing you should really read the guides first. Basicly you gotta start raising the 200 mhz one. problem is, when you raise that, it raises all the other frequencies of the computer as well (RAM). You can either limit the RAM so it stays near or below its default speed or let your motherboard manage it automatically. If you think you got it down, try raizing the 200 mhz to 205 mhz and reboot to see if your speeds changed. Use a program called cpu z to show you information about the speeds your computer is running. Also download a stress test program called Prime 95 or Super pi.

If you think you got it down try raising it to 250 mhz in increments of 5 mhz. That will bring you to about 2.25 Ghz. Every time you make an adjustment always make a small adjustment and boot up into windows to make sure everything is fine. If you change a setting wrong, you're computer might not even do anything when you turn it on. If this is the case, don't sweat it, just hit the switch on the back of your powersupply, pop the battery out of the motherboard, wait about 30 seconds, reinsert battery, flip the switch on the powersupply back in and your BIOS settings should be reset to default.

I personally like overclocking from the BIOS more but since your a beginner you might want to try with a program. This computer (see signature) is the first computer I've really gotten a pretty good overclock on which took me several days to complete. I did make quite a few stupid mistakes on the way though. I'd say I probably put at least 6 hours of time just into overclocking my cpu properly. If you have a lot of spare time on your hands experiment with BIOS settings but NEVER make large adjustments and always google something if you can't tell what it means.

read up on overclocking, and then post in an aporpriate enthusiast forum.

i'm an avid overclocker, as are many here, but you'd be better served posting in a forum like:

Leading tech publication with fast news, thorough reviews and a strong community.

            or otherwise.

              Hi! THx for the replies...

Oh... ok... the programs are free right?

I'll try to download it and start doing some changes to my com.

Oh, and if you overclock your cpu for too long, what can happen?
Shorter cpu lifespan? Can something like that happen?

And my last question; can i only adjust my cpu, not the ram or anything going up together, just with a program?

              Thx for your help!

                1) Yes the programs are free
2)As long as you don't overcock your CPU way too far and your temperatures are not very high, your CPU lifespan will still be 5+ years.
3)No, you cannot adjust ONLY the cpu unless you have a "black edition" AMD, or an AMD FX line of processors. There are a few intel processors that allow this as well but they are also very expensive.

If you have to ask that many questions about how to overclock, would be a real good idea if you start here,

and do a little reading before attempting it.

yeah, you can seriously ruin your computer if you don't know what your doing. One of my friends that I help overclock his computer tried to do it himself one time. He came up to me and said, Hey man! I tried to overclock my computer and nothing happened!! So I was like, well, what did you do? And he replied, well I turned the voltage up all the way and it still ran the same speed!! I was like Noooooo!!!

A simple mistake like that can burn stuff up quick.

Wow... I guess how many minutes it will take to burn itself up when the voltage is maxed.

                      Well, thx for the replies.

                      And i have another question.

I read it in the guide stormy told me to, well it says below 45 C is good and 46~55 uncomfortable and +55 is bad. Well right now i didn't overclock my cpu and the tempature is at around 50. I tried to overclock it to 220x9 and the tempature went up to 56 or 57... Do i need to get a cooling system???

Can u please suggest one for me if i do need one?

                      Thx.

That is unusually high for a core 2 duo. Make sure your heatsink isn't clogged with dust. If thats not the problem, your thermal paste must be bad or something. You should try re-seating the cooler with some arctic silver. If that doesn't work, its time for a new cooler.

melting point for silicon is +100C.

stability is the main issue. the fact is that you may reduce the life of your processor from 10 years to 5 (maybe 3) with a heavy overclock. that's a non-issue, as your processor will be hopelessly old by then.

you should look up your max TDP for your cpu, which should give you and idea of where your CPU should be running. aside from that, tinker with it and explore...if you get abnormal voltages/temps, then figure out what is going wrong, or ask specific questions.

this is physics, not rocket science. :) <--hope you caught that.

edit: i looked at the specs. max tdp is 65W, so you want to keep it under about 62-63C-ish if at all possible.

you aren't going to burn anything up at 57C, whether you start throttling is another issue...have to think about that more later...late here now. good luck!

It doesn't matter what the max temps are. We need to find out what his problem is because a core 2 duo should not even get into that range with his default clocks.

                              OOOH~~!!! Thx for the replies...

Well, the temperture went down a little these days to like 45 so
its not a big problem now. I think something just went wrong with the sensor. But i do think i have to clean my fan.

I'm going to try and overclock it to about 10% and see if it's ok.(temperature and etc)
I'm still confused about how to ONLY overclock the cpu.

                              ^^ oH. and merry christmas!
