Answers:
1) first guess is that you'd still be ok w/26A and 2x8600gts--your old 480W. they can only draw a MAX of 75W through the pcie-slot anyway, and they don't draw that. 600W is overkill.
2) the six pin connector is for graphics cards that are oriented towards gamers. it provides extra power in addition to the 75W you get over the pci-e interface. you've got two connectors in case you want to buy a couple of gaming cards.

what ^ said--why 2x8600's?
--only with a little more explanation. 8600's weren't terribly good cards when they were released. there are much now better, cheaper products that will run games better. if you sold your current 8600 and used the money you'd otherwise blow on a second, you could have a really decent single card (hd3870) that would run circles around 8600's in sli. for maybe $60 more, you're in--even better--256mb 8800gt land.Comment

Well, thing is... my 480W only has 17A at the 12V rail.
As for the 8800GT, you mean that the 256MB 8800GT will run better than two 512MB 8600GT's?Comment

and yes, a single 8800gt will thrash 2 8600's in sli, added memory and all. you can either interpret that as the new 8800gt being just that fast, or the 8600's being just that slow.
i couldn't find a site with a direct 8600 sli v. 8800gt setup, but i did find one comparing the gt w/2 hd2600xts (better cards than the 8600). the result doesn't argue for stacking up on lowish end parts.

20+18 = 38A. Unless it states clearly on the specs that the actual maximum current is something like 34A. But it has to be stated clearly like with * or footnote or such that despite the sum of being higher the actual max value is lower.
Like I have (something from memory) 18+18+18+18=72 the actual max amperage is 56A or so. I can't remember the specs out of hand.Comment

Well, I'm going out and buying a 512MB GDDR3 8800GT today. With my current PC specs (in my signature), will I have any problems running this card?

it should fly in that system. good luck on getting it though--are they back in stock yet? i ordered an hd3870 from dell for $180 ($50 off from dell and $50 back from paypal) and it still hasn't shipped yet, lol. dec. 27 latest update on estimate.
good choice going w/512mb. it'll really pay off with some of the newer games and upcoming games that are reasonably coded for speed.

Well, unluckily I was unable to get the 512MB 8800GTS because TigerDirect didn't have them in stock. Instead, I bought myself the 320MB 8800GTS for $299.99, which is good enough for me.

So, since I bought the 8800GTS I've been having this game crashing problem. For some reason, which I don't know, BF2 keeps crashing after about 15 minutes of play. Does anyone have any idea on what can be the problem? Could it possibly be the power supply? Is there any website that you can check if your PSU is giving enough power to your motherboard or video card?Comment

what psu do you have? i see in your sig you have a 600w psu that should be enough but what brand is it? a good quality psu is one of the most important things in a pcComment

Ultra X-Finity series, something like that. Don't know, but this really disappoints me, I spend $300 on a video card and can't play a game without it crashing...
Is there any possibility of this happening because the video card blocks like half of the chipset fan?
I know for a fact it can't be because of heat, because the system temperature doesn't go over 60C when I'm in-game.Comment

well its not the psu then its decent but im not too much of an expert on case temps and stuff like that so you should get somebody else's opinion on that.
have you got the latest drivers for the GTS? that might be your problem but im not an expertComment

Yup, have all the latest drivers for the video card and motherboard. This is horrible! I've been to TigerDirect to return/exchange items about 5 times these past 3 weeks and don't really feel like going back.. lol.
Well, the BF2 crashing I found out was actually due to heat. I took of the side cover from my case, and the game ran excellent. Time to try out Crysis. I guess I need to get a new case, like a cooler master or something.
So the PC temperature was the problem all along, glad I found out. Guess a new case will be on my to buy list.Comment
